Default Buy/adopt a hamster in Glasgow/Stirling/Falkirk

Hi every one,

I want to buy a Syrian hamster for my kids (boy 9, girl 16). Do you know where in Glasgow I can get one? I prefer a store with a few of them so that I can choose one.

I can also travel to Falkirk or Stirling for this.

Many Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul, i have a syrian up for adoption on the forum, his name is Alvin and he was bought in march 2010 so is about 8 or 9 months old, comes with cage and everything you need to get started.
Needs taming though for handling, i could handle him when i first got him but due to a chance in home circumstances and work changes i do not get the time to spend in the evening with him now so he needs plenty love and attention

Or if you want a baby hamster then the obvious choice is P@H or a local pet shop, there is also a hamster rescue section on here with people in out area.

i got mine from p@h in the forge retail park...they dont have good cages for syrians in the shop though....only the really small ones or then really massive ones for rats, gerbils and rabbits

There are not many breeders in Scotland Paul. Moderator Babyboos sometimes has litters so it may be worth trying to contact her.
Baily Benji is up your way and although she does not currently have any babies she may be able to advise.
I have heard good reports of a few pet shops so hopefully someone may advise or you could look on the preloved or freeads for home raised hamsters which do tend to be tamer for children.

Thanks all for your advice.

Dear Donna,

Thanks for the offer. I will think about it but at this time I think I prefer a baby hamster, simply because I don't want to disappoint kids with one that might not last long or one that might bite them straight away

My understanding is chances of handling baby ones with kids is better than having an adult one that needs taming. I might be wrong though!

So I will try other options first and I looking forward for any further advice.

By the way, I am sure you are aware of this, but just in case you are not, have you see this: Babyboos Hamstery

Hi Paul
Baby hamsters tend to be quite jumpy - as in out of your hands etc. They can also be a bit skittish and will require taming. There is lots of advice on taming on the wiki and there are many threads about it.

As I am sure you will know its impossible to say how long a hamster will live and I can understand your concern on adopting due to this. Sometimes an adoptee will be tame already but in a way the taming and getting know each other is part of the enjoyment of getting a hamster.

If Babyboos has any syrians then she does have lovely hamsters with good temperment. I have had one from her in the past. The petshop I use to go to has unfortunately closed now.

Donna - babyboos does take rescues in if required - at least she has in the past - so a pm to her may help you with your current situation.

Unfortunately it may be a bit of a trek but there is a very good shop/rescue in Edinburgh called Paws Here. I have had 2 hamsters from there and they are perfectly socialised when you get one and from experience all they want to do it get cuddled. Paws Here

Hope this is of some help!

That babyboos hamstery place sounds great. It would be good if we had something like that around here to adopt animals. Thats where I would get my next hamster Its like a pet place solely for hamster care.
