Default Here's actual pictures

Here are pictures of the two hamsters that we rescued. Last week she had her babies, but all of them were stillborn. Poor girl. We've offically named them now.
Here's Jasmin:

And here is Basil, he has no eyes as you can see:

Aww - they are lovely. Was he born without eyes or did he lose them later?

I believe in another thread we had determined the white one was probably born without them due to a bad gene? Nonetheless they are both adorable and lucky to have found you. The white one is so white! her gorgeous, its to bad there is a health risk in breeding for a pure white color, they are lovely!

They are really lovely hammies. From looking at these new pictures it is pretty certain that Basil is an Anophthalmic (or Eyeless) white. This is caused by a gene called the white belly gene and if both hamsters carry this gene and are mated they will produce eyeless offspring. From looking at Basil I would also say he is a Satin hamster which is why he is so shiny. Two satin hamsters should also never be mated as they can produce very sparsely coated almost bald young. I do not think they are very old. Can you tell me if Jasmin has a sort of white band going half way round her body as she actually looks like a banded hamster. Her belly is very white and I actually suspect they are brother and sister. If so she is probably carrying white belly and he is definitely white belly so that is probably the reason she lost the babies. Perhaps it is a blessing in disguise really as they may have had problems and sibling matings are never a good idea. He should lead a perfectly happy life though as hammies eyesight is poor anyway and I am so glad they have a nice home with you now.

Yes, the white goes all the way around except for a small section on the middle of her back. So that makes her banded?

Indeed it does. I would say she is a Golden Banded and very pretty too. The soft downy fur on her ears makes me think she is only about 4-6 months old. Is she shiny like Basil? I don't think she is satin but Pophammy and I both think Basil probably is. His coat is quite long and fluffy. Does he have a long tufty skirt at the back? He may be a longhaired anopthalmic satin white making hin quite a genetic acheivment really!!!

He has long tufts that come out in the back. When I first got him and was looking at pictures, I thought he looked alot like a long hair. But, not all of his hair is long. So you think that they are really young? Poor things. Jasmin isn't really too shiny, not like Basil.

I would say he is long haired then if he has the tufts at the back. Satin long coats are less dense than normal. The fur is not long all over and the longest bits are the 'skirt' on the back of a male, long tufts on the scent glands and from behind the ears. The coat usually gets longer with age. Female long coats are just sort of fluffy all over and do not have the skirt or sometimes a 'mini' skirt 4-6 months is mature enough to breed for a female and is in fact the ideal age for a first litter though they can breed from around 4 weeks but this is not a good idea! Probably someone had an unplanned litter, could not home them so dumped them, poor little lambs. They are lucky to have found you and you them. I believe that anopthalmics tend to get up at odd times not following the normal nocturnal hamster pattern as they do not know night from day which can be rather nice as you will probably see more of him.
