did i make the right decision?
Guys i feel so cruel right now.. here's the story...
My mum works in a school and the dinner lady there has a hamster for her kid and its bitten the child so she was looking to rehome it.. my mum told her i would have the hamster..( without clearing it with me btw.) the first i hear is when my mum rings me to ask if i want her.. the hamster is a girl and this is all we know, no idea on age and that its biting all the time...my mum said i have five mins to let her know so she can contact the lady.. I said No but for selfish reasons that i'm not proud of. for one i have no idea the age so could end up losing the baby after a few mnths and i'm not prepared for that after Poppet and I've never tamed a hamster before as all mine have been hand reared or came to me tamed already..i feel cruel as i feel i'm letting this hammy be unwanted when i have an empty cage ready... My partner wants us to look for one during my birthday week off so he can be a part of the process..should i have said yes?

I think i would of done the same, if you don't know the age and the important stuff... its a bit risky! it could of been a dwarf for all you know, if your mum had given you more info and more time to think about it it would of been a lot easier for you.
Dont feel bad about it, you did the right thing in my opinion xx

Womblehands you have done what is right for you at this time. Before you can look after other animals or people you have to look after yourself. If it didn't feel right to you, which is what I am getting from your post then you have made the right decision. suga

i agree with suga great advise. your mum shouldnt have assumed you would have just took her even if you do have a great love of hamsters. think its great your partner wants a imput.

Dont worry, you can save them all and you did what you felt is the right thing to do. It was unfair your mom put such pressure on you really. That hamster might find another home, dont worry! We cant help them all:/

Re: did i make the right decision?
wow 5 minute decision time, that is very very tight...
yeah i agree its not really... sensible to take on a hamster not knowing anything about it, and in 5 minutes too! after loosing poppet like that it probably is a bit rushed, i think you made the right decision anyway x
you could ask your mum to tell her to advertise it on preloved or gumtree theres gotta be someone who's prepared out there x

there is nor right or wrong in situations like that. either you feel up to it or not. if your are not comfortable with taking this hamster in then theres absolutely nothing wrong with saying no.
your mum could take the ham herself

Lol i asked that... my dad said no as they adopted my pet budgie when i found out i was allergic and that was 5 years ago and he's going strong, and they just had a puppy who is slowly destroying the house..

Re: did i make the right decision?
I would have done the same as you. I think I would be afraid of the hammy biting me so would make the taming process a lot longer and more stressful. Maybe if you find out more about the hamster you can advertise it on her so someone with a lot of experience and in the same area as you can take it. That would make you feel better as you would know it would be going to a safe home.
