Pickle Pants the rescue hamster

I thought i'd share some pictures of Pickle, he was doing a cute thing this evening, he was washing his feet and in between his toes, he was sitting on his bum and trying to wash his tail.. btw why do hamsters have tails?... i wish i could have gotten a picture but i didnt want to disturb him..

Gorgeous! Such a lovely looking chap . I love the second picture, where he looks so relaxed, like he is melting into your hand!

I always assumed hamster tails were vestigal (something that closely related species have, or a species had in it's evolutionary past, but aren't really necessary.. liiiike how we have that funny bone at the base of our back, that supposedly was a tail in our evolutionary past, and how many species have a "five fingered hand" appendage - like bat wings, the five bony "fingers" in a penguins wing.. a shocking amount do, actually). So I always assumed it's a relic from their evolutionary past.

I can't imagine what purpose such a mini tail would serve to the hamsters we know today, I'd be intersted to know now! *grumbles* I don't have an evolution or rodent text book at home!

And yes, it is mega cute when they sit like that having a wash . So adorable. Chewy always looks like a right fatty porker, as his fur makes him appear to have hammy man-boobs when he sits like that!

Have you noticed how sometimes the tiny tail goes round and round like they think they have a long tail and are trying to use it for balance?!

Well, yes, there are the .. umm, baby pods, but we are used to seeing those now. It's funny how quickly I wasn't grossed out by how they sit on them on your hand - I thought it was horrid at first!

If you can, hold him in your hand, Sir A usually does it when he's trying to jump out of mine he is going mental tonight, I never knew he liked to do backwards monkey bars! he keeps falling off then standing up and looking at me like "yeah, what?". very funny.

I love the baby pods too, so cute!

My Daisy uses her tail to grip things - if she's peering over the edge of the table she'll stick her bum next to something (like a mug or a box) and her little tale will try and grip onto it. She's used it on my fingers when being held too and it was quite a strong feeling!
