advice needed on hamster
hi.. this is the story... i was looking thru the freeads when i came across a male syrian for sale, i showed my partner because the picture of him was sitting in a jam jar and it was kinda cute.. my partner just nodded... then said ahhhh but its a boy, we need a little girl.. as my birthday is in a few weeks my partner said we should get a little girl syrian to live with us. I think he misses the cuddles to be honest as my boys just like to run over him and Poppet used to have staring contests with him and whisker kisses...anyway my question is whether its too soon to get another syrian, will it be like replacing Poppet? i would like another but its sooo hard when they leave i just don't know if i can take it anymore. What do you guys think? my bfs argument is that we have a home to give, money and time to spare and its saving a hammy from being unhappy

Re: advice needed on hamster
Well depends really if your ready for it - obviously it would help the hammy but whould u look at him everyday thinking of lil poppet and feeling sad? if so then just leave it - theres plenty of hammies in need of homes they'll always pop up x but if not then go for it

Re: advice needed on hamster
I feel sad watching Peanut look for Poppet when he's having floor time.....it may help though having to go thru the whole taming process again.. thanks... my bf wants a little girl. I might keep my eye out and if one shows up maybe it will be nice.. also i have tubs of treats to get rid of... peanut and pickle are too fussy..lol

Re: advice needed on hamster
i dont think anybody can answer that question for you...its totally up to you. some people have to wait a while and some people get another hamster the next day. there is no right or wrong.
but getting another hamster doesnt mean you would replace poppet. dont think like that!! i am sure poppet wouldnt think you would replace her either. think of it more like you are giving another hamster a lovely home...that sounds much better, doesnt it just listen to what your heart says...but trust me...nobody would ever think your are only replacing poppet
xx

Re: advice needed on hamster
After Little Mo was pts, I was definitely not intending to get another hammy for a long while - I felt it would be replacing her too soon and nothing could ever take her place. But....... 2 or 3 weeks later I spotted Daisy needing a new home and couldnt resist helping her, and to be honest welcoming her into my home helped me sooo much. I still had Mo's cage set up as she left it, and seeing that empty was making me sad every day - I had a great big void in my life. Of course I stilled missed mo terribly, and did feel bad loving Daisy - guilty..but Daisy has helped fill a great big hole. I think I'd still be really depressed now if I didnt have Daisy to look after.
So, as others have said only you can say if it feels right to get another, but I know it certainly helped me
