Re: advice needed on hamster
another question i forgot to ask... i would like to get one from a small pet store we have in out local town as its not too far so not too stressful and the owners are lovely, but i know if i walk in i will be coming out with a hammie but i want to make sure i'm not supporting these rodent farms ive read about. I would ask the owner but i know if he says yes to the farm scenario i will feel even more sorry for them and end up getting one anyway...grrrrrrr.. The store is small and doesnt get hamsters a lot so i'm guessing not from farms as they normally go to huge chain stores.. mmmmmmmmmmmm me confused

It was a good choice for me. I have never forgotten how much I adored Peaches, but I had the distraction of a new chum to tame, which did wonders for me, as I was truly moping around all sad until then. And I think I provide a good home for small furries - they get hours of run around time every night, and it's a shame to deny a little critter that, isn't it?

I still say goodnight to Poppets plant every night, and we have kept her igloo and white house in our spare room as a memory

Re: advice needed on hamster
I'm so glad you kept things. It's nice to pick them up, when you are ready, and just sit and smile and remember the fun times . I couldn't for a while, but sometimes I like to look at pictures of Peaches and just grin about what a nutter she was (she was barking mad). She brought lots to my life, even helped my depression improve, and I hope I brought lots to hers, like I am positive you did with Poppet.
I know when you find the right new critter, it will have a brilliant time too

When my little hammy Matilda died me and my OH buried her in the same plant pot as my first hammy Rosa so they could be together. I also kept a little box with some of Matilda's bedding in and one of her tubes she liked to chew.

Re: advice needed on hamster
Aww glad that you have come to a decision, rehoming a little unwanted ham would be lovely, and Poppet would be very pleased and proud that her mummy is doing so!
As for the pet shop - why dont you go in and ask aboyut there hams, but make sure that you have no money (or not enough to buy one!) so that you cant just cave in!! If they only have them in occasionally I would think that they would be for a breeder, but remember there is no telling how good this breeder is, I would ask the owner and just see what they say

I'd have a nose around and I am sure you will know when you find the perfect one for you!! Something will pop up, I found Lisa and Dynamite when I needed him the most, it's just fate for you I suppose!!! I really hope you find another girl to look after!

Re: advice needed on hamster
I absolutely know what you mean about the empty cage. Staring at Luppi's really hurts. After Toshiro died I spent about a week or so thinking the same thing. Should I get another hammy? Will I just be replacing Tosh?
In the end I waited until I saw another hamster who gave me that same feeling I had when I saw Tosh and Aizen for the first time. That feeling of "If I don't get this hamster I will really REALLY regret it"
Poppet would want you to get another hamster and show it the same love you showed her. That's just what I think.

It just depends on you. My Syrian Lily died on the 10th of September then an hour after I discovered her I got some more bad news. It was a horrible day and I just needed something good to happen so I took my dog out for a walk and went into my local pet store to buy my puppy some treats and saw that they had a Syrian hamster there, he was the last one there and I just fell in love with him as he was just so cute with his one dark eye and one bright eye. I had to buy him! All the staff were saying they would miss him because of how tame he was and how cute :P I was not ready to get another hamster when I buried Lily but as soon as I saw Simon I knew I had to get him. I put him into my spare imac fantasy cage as I couldn't bare to clean out Lily's cage and also because he was not a replacement for Lily.
As I said it's just up to you, you have to go with what you feel at the time. I'm still not over the death of my little Lily and I still cry for her but I know that I have Simon and now Greg to cheer me up..

I know a few small pet shop owners and they have told me that they do come from rodent farms
although some have had some from me in the past
