Which would you choose?
Hello everyone. I just thought I would put a scenario that I came across yesterday out there for you to evaluate. I'm also interested in hearing some of your reasoning.
I'm just going to start out by saying that I think all hammies should be adopted, I'm just curious as to what you think you would do in this scenario.
I randomly go to pet stores when I'm near them and have some time to kill. Of course I always go and check out all the hammies. Well after I checked out all the hammies that the pet store was selling, I noticed a table with a couple cages on it. Inside the cages there were a couple hamsters, and the paper on top of the cages gave their names and the reason that they were at the pet store was "My family couldn't take care of me anymore." Basically, there was no sign of abuse or anything from that(doesn't mean there wasn't, but I'll never know because I didn't ask and I didn't actually see the hammies because they were deeply buried inside their igloos).
The question I pose to you: Would you be more likely to adopt one of the hamsters that all ready had a name and was once a member of a family or a hamster that had never lived in a home and never named?
I just thought it might raise some good discussion, and maybe get your critical thinking skills going. haha.
Of course, in an ideal world, I would take both of them home. lol.
There are no right answers.

Re: Which would you choose?
that is difficult....
just to get you right: you want to know if i would be more likely to take a rescue hamster with name and background explanation or a baby hamster?? OR is it either a hamster with name and background story or a unwanted hamster with no name and background story??

A baby hamster I do believe. Just one that they have in the pet stores that haven't sold yet. So not necessarily an unwanted hamster if that makes sense.

Re: Which would you choose?
it does make sense
in that case: i would generally prefer adopting an unwanted hamster...but i always came to the pest shop knowing exactly what i wanted, a syrian for example but in that moment they didnt have any syrians in the adoption centre so i ended up buying a baby ham...if that makes sense
of course i know i could have looked at preloved or other websites for unwanted syrians in that moment but i dont enjoy flicking through hundreds of pages to see if theres anyone near me
so...yeah...what i would like to do and what i actually do is completely differen

Re: Which would you choose?
No matter how adorable, they will find a home pretty quickly and i like to abvoid the temptation if i can!
Rescue hamsters from the RSPCA or advertised on preloved etc. are less likely to find a home so i'd rather look there.

Re: Which would you choose?
Good question Shmoo!
Um . . . I personally would always rather adopt an 'unloved' or 'unwanted' hammy, even if they had issues. I have a nightmare with the adoption section in Pets at home (like pet co or petsmart). They have a special section for animals that have been dumped or handed in for various reasons, and that where my little dwarfie was from. I always want to take them all home, especially as they are mostly labled as 'biter' or 'aggressive'. I always feel so sorry for them and thick, yeah but WHY are they aggressive?? What have these poor little critters been though?
Boris was in the adoption centre with his former cage mate, they were given away asthey were fighting. The one that got lables as the one that had been bullied sold right away, but little Boris labled as a bully no one wantedhin - except me!! He is so laid back, its crazy, he likes his own space but he puts up with cuddles and kisses from time to time!
So yeah, a named hammy gets my vote!

Re: Which would you choose?
I'd take the returned hamster. This way I am not supporting the pet store and I am giving a hamster a second chance. Most of the time 'evil' hamsters are misunderstood or aren't evil at all. They may be cage territorial and a larger cage would solve that or a little time and patience for a frightened hamster. I'd always rather adopt then buy from a pet store. It's not like you can't change the name anyways.
