Re: Food List (safe for both dwarves and syrians!)
i did mention hybrids in my correction...
ww are not as prone to it as campbells are, however hybrids are.
Most ww around are hybrids. If you brought it as at pet shop it more than likely is, there are only a few breeders especially in the uk who supply pet shops with pure stock. for countries like usa this is even more true, there are only about 3 or so true pure ww breeders in the country!

I live in Hong Kong. Here actually mostly you can only get winter white or syrians. I haven't seen any campbells at all. But it's good to hear ww not as prone to diabetes.

Re: Food List (safe for both dwarves and syrians!)
Hi I always thought that also Robo are subject to diabets.. good to know they are not!!!
by the way which hammies food you beleive is the best? I am using now the pet@home one because I got 3 kilos of it for free when I bought the cages, plus I do not know any indipendent pet shop around my area. Do you think the Pet at home is good enough? I have asked in another forum and they sugested me . the Vitackraft emoton beauty or the Bunny

I know this thread is old but I wondered if it could be made a sticky? The list is fantastic and would be a good reference thread for new (and old!) members

Re: Food List (safe for both dwarves and syrians!)
Thank you for the list, I am off to P@H tonight with our son to buy a hamster, our cage arrived from zooplus (savic cambridge) so after school we are off, just hope that the one he fell in love with Sat is still there.
Just out of curiosity, for a Syrian how often should the veggies and proteins be fed? I understand dried food every other day, is that right?

Re: Food List (safe for both dwarves and syrians!)
I noticed that in your list you put orange, lemon and mandarin as dangerous. My vet instead said more then once to give orange and mandarin to my hammies ( robos) because they are a good source of vit c. I gave to them several time and they liked it allot. Most of my friend give them citrus fruit and non of their hammies and they never had any prolem.
Do you know the reason why we should not give them citrus fruit?
Also I wanted to point out, only bitter almonds containe cynide not sweet almonds. Most o the almond you find in the shop are sweet almonds and the few bitter almonds in commerce are all being processed to remove the cynide because if ingested it is dengerous even for human not only for animals.

I think it may be something to do with the Citric Acid that makes citrus fruits unhealthy?
This list on the wiki too btw for anyone who wants easy access.

Re: Food List (safe for both dwarves and syrians!)
I've been looking on all the lists I can find to see if it would be ok to feed a bit of mushroom to a syrian, does anyone know?

I always heard from web and vet that mushrooms are bad for hammies but I do not know why. Try to ask your vet. I believe is something to do with the way hammies digest their food and the fact that mushroom contain allots of mold and other bacteria, not sure though
