Default Herbs, sprays and forage

Hello,

I did some research before getting my Russian dwarf hamster, Fluffy. Herbs and sprays were recommended, especially by YouTubers. I got the impression that these were essential for enrichment and diet.

I ordered a rosewood 'herbs' product that turned out to be not suitable for hamsters. I don't know what they mean by herbs. Do they mean forage?

I am giving my hamster a little bit of forage every day. He eats some of it. It builds up in the cage. Is that alright? They are from pets at home. They are dried parsley and celery, hibiscus and dandelion, more rarely I give fennel, caraway and dill sticks.

I got some millet. They are big. I was expecting to put a whole one in the cage but they are huge. I only gave a small amount. How often can I feed this?

My hamsters always have millet in their cages and the dwarfs especially like to strip the seeds off. I think they see it more as an activity than food. After a while there's a thick layer of it in the bottom of the cage where they hoard or sleep.
I buy the yellow and red millet from the bird section.

What i also buy is the Rosewood Pick N' Fly. They nibble on those. Some of them look like trees to a small hamster and they try to climb them to get to the seeds high up.
My little dwarf Edwina couldn't get to the top so she gnawed through the stem to fell it like a tree!

My lot doesn't like the strong smelling ones like the caraway and fennel sticks but hamsters like different things so it's a matter of trying out different ones.

I don't think there's a time limit to how long they can stay in a cage or a limit to quantity. Many people add lots of sprays, herbs and flowers in a natural look set up because they are edible if the hamster wants them and they look nice.

I always freeze everything for a week in case there are any bugs.

Hi Ria, thanks so much for your reply. This helped me. I thought that the forage would be fine left in the cage. Fluffy likes to dig there sometimes too.

Fluffy hasn't chewed the fennel and caraway sticks but he has moved them (so I'm guessing he was playing with them?) I'm just wondering. Maybe he doesn't like them much either. I got them in the Hopes he would chew them.

Can I ask what are your hamster's favourite food, do you think?

We have four Syrians, a Winter White dwarf and a Robo. They all love their daily portion of fresh food which they get early evening. Favourites are broccoli, cauliflower, romaine lettuce, spinach, cucumber and sweetcorn.

They all love their Whimzee chew. I get the xs toothbrushes.

The Syrians like a tiny dollop of porridge before they go to bed and they all like a bit of boiled egg now and again.

Nuts are liked by all once a week, walnut, brazil nut or a dried, unsweetened coconut flake.

They eat their hamster mix and enjoy licking up a daily pinch of brown linseeds.

The dwarf will meerkat for her mealworm treat and the Robo can be bribed with mealworms because he's so keen on them.

Sunflower seeds in their shell are a treat they all love and a fresh dandelion leaf from the garden gets gobbled up in seconds.

The Syrians love a nibble stick but it has to be the Vitakraft grape and nut. They turn their noses up to healthier or herby ones. Oh yes and they all like a shrimp cookie.

Come to think of it, they aren't fussy eaters.

Wow Ria that is amazing you have so many hamsters and they are better fed than me

Seriously though thanks for this, really helpful. I will try Fluffy with some of these. Your hamsters are very lucky.
