Default Chicken

I have a 16 month old hamster named Orange. When I look at other pics of hamsters online (Instagram, primarily), I notice she's underweight compared to others. I wanted to start feeding her pieces of chicken to plump her up a bit, but I'm concerned that it will go bad in the cage? I know hams like to store things, so if I give her a piece of chicken and she stores it, will it cause disease/rot in the cage? Will it attract bugs?

Yes, i think that chicken would rot if left in the cage. I'd give it to her during out of cage time and hope that she'll eat it instead of pouch it for later.

Do you know why she is underweight? Is she getting enough food like a tablespoon of hamster mix daily, fresh veg in small amounts and healthy treats?

I would weigh her weekly to keep an eye on her weight because hamsters can lose weight rapidly should they ever take ill with an infection etc.

She's always been underweight. When I got her at 6 months she was big and fat because the pet store's wheel was way too small and she had no way to exercise. When she slept, since she's an brownish Syrian, she got named Orange because she looked like a big plump orange.

Once I got her the right size wheel she shed all that weight. So, I she's been the same weight for about 10 months. She gets lots of treats and fed every day. I work for a vet so I've had her checked for parasites and she has none. I think she just needs a little something extra but has no interest in fresh food.

How about a bit of porridge or scrambled egg?

When you say porrige you mean?

Also, would the egg run the same risk as the chicken?

Porridge as in porridge oats cooked in water.
Or Ella's kitchen baby strawberry and raspberry porridge. The banana rice is nice too. Both mix with hot water and hamsters like it. I give them a very small amount in an egg cup now and again.
Not something they could pouch and they either eat it or leave it.

I suppose scrambled or boiled egg would go off if left.

What does your hamster weigh? They vary so much in weight.

Following on from what Ria said, porridge is good and they can also have the plain oats which is less messy. Anything wet or that goes stale quickly, feed with them.

Mine used to sit on my lap while I had dinner and she’d have hers at the same time. That way you can see them eat and make sure they have a variety.

Mealworms are also high in protein and very cheap.

If they are underweight, seeds can also be a good choice as they are high in fat, however, don’t overfeed. Just like us, we can eat fatty foods to a certain amount and our body will process it, but when eating too much it just goes on as fat and can be stored causing heart conditions. So don’t overfeed seeds, if they don’t have any in their diet currently this would help though.

Also my hamster LOVED pancakes, so try this as well maybe?

Keep in mind hamsters are normally creatures of habit, so if ever they do store food it’s almost always the same place in the cage so just check it once in a while when you spot clean.
