Question Hamster empties dish in a hour or two!

Hello,

I'm a new owner first time pet owner so go easy on me!

My hamster literally takes like a hour or three to empty his food bowl. I assume he "stores" it all but I'm not sure. Is this normal?

I read that I should give him his food and wait 2-3 days for him to finish the food in his bowl so he doesnt be a picky eater but this guy empties his bowl in a hour lol

Everytime I fill his bowl, with the following:
1. Harry hamster mix as the base
2. Chia seeds 7-10
3. Flax seed 7-10
4. Sun flower seed 2-5
5. Meal worms 2-5

I add a pumpkin seed every 2-3 days, monkey nut 1-2 times a week, biscrok original dog biscuit 1-2times a week.

On top of all the above, once in the morning and once at night i give him a very small piece of food and dont give him same thing two days in a row, so every day he has something different. Things like boiled egg, yolk, carrot, strawberry, etc.

So my question is, how often should I fill his bowl?

Thank you!

(Btw guys my hamster didnt eat dried shrimp, or dried meal worms so I put his meal worms in hot water for 30 mins, dry them on a tissue, then he eats them right up!)

Yes, he's probably storing it and it's normal. Especially when they're new and building up a hoard.

I have a hybrid dwarf (I saw from your other thread that's what you have) and I give her about a tablespoon of food a day. She is the same as yours in that she immediately hoards all her food. I scatter most of it over her bedding so that she has to search for it and this keeps her occupied for longer. I also feed her a dwarf hamster food from Rodipet as I find she enjoys the smaller seeds. The small seeds are harder for her to find in the bedding which again keeps her occupied. The pieces in Harry Hamster are quite large for a dwarf hamster.

That's good to know. I sometimes hide food around her enclosure, or in a Boredom breaker.
I plan on scattering a herb mix (any suggestions? ) once a week.

You're right the pieces in harry hamster are quite big.. I'll be keeping an eye on them and break the big pieces in half.

Thanks!

I forgot to ask. How do sprays work? Millet sprays, oat sprays, flax sprays, etc.
Can you leave a 1/4 of a millet spray in a cage for a week. Will the hamster devour it or will he eat it slowly?

Thanks!

I give my hamster a seed spray about once a week. Usually she plucks it bare during the first night but then she doesn't get another one until next week.

I buy the Rosewood Harvest Festival pack of seed sprays on Amazon which comes with dari and flax, and I also buy millet sprays from my local pet shop. Rosewood also do lots of nice herb mixes on Amazon (search for "rosewood naturals forage").

I stick the sprays upright in the little wooden stumps you can get from Pets at Home. Below is actually my gerbil cage, not my hamster cage but I do the same thing in both cages:

Hey guys.

I was able to check his multi chamber and also the bedding in his cage and only found 1-2 pellets from the harry hamster in one of his rooms.

I think I'm going to start filling his bowl once every day? Or should I keep filling it once every 2 days?

Sushi78 - thanks. I'll be buying the rosewood sprays. I saw some herb mixes at p@h and picked one up for 1.50. I saw some rosewood herb mixes at morrisons, they where cheaper than p@h too!
I dont think my hamster likes the herb mix

update!

I found his stash..

Yea I will keep feeding him once every 3 days. I am now scattering the big pieces pf his meal and putting the smaller stuff in his bowl. Fresh foods almost every day. Meal worms the day before i feed/scatter his food.

I think that should be fine, I do keep an eye on a chart I found that tells me how much and how often to feed certain foods/seeds

thanks!

edit: I scattered a herb/dandelion mix, he seems to be a picky eater with it and only eats some parts of it. I think it makes the cage a bit messy. I might put a bit of the herbs in boredom breaker toys instead so he can break the toy apart, eat the stuff he likes, and i can throw away the rest. It does have a strong nice smell to it tho
