Muesli or not??
Hi, I’m very new to the hamster world and when I bought Ozzy from Pets at Home (UK) they recommended a muesli mix which he has been happily eating with a variety of fresh food. But I’ve been doing some research and the PDSA website says DON’T use a muesli mix because they’ll pick out the sweet stuff and leave the more fibrous or nutritious parts. He definitely favours certain bits but I didn’t realise that could be why. What are they supposed to have then? Why would Pets at Home recommend it if it wasn’t suitable? Any other ideas for a balanced diet welcomed.

Re: Muesli or not??
Mixed diets are far better for hamsters. They should not be eating a pelleted food - that is only appropriate with hamsters who aren't able to properly chew hard foods and therefore need a diet which can be provided in part with softened pellets.
A diverse diet provides far more enrichment value and is much more appropriate for a species who really does benefit from the enrichment that such a food brings. Pelleted foods do not have this benefit and are, among other things, incredibly boring to put it simply.

Re: Muesli or not??
Pets at home sell/recommend lots of items that are not really suitable for many pets/animals. They also sell some greta items, sadly it boils down to making money.
Depending on what species of hamster you have, If it was a syrian I would at the very least upgrade to Harry Hamster.
Other good more expensive brands are bunny dreams, rodipet, getzoo, mixerama

Re: Muesli or not??
Thank you both, so as long as I continue with this batch of muesli and continue to provide a mix of fresh food too it’s ok? I’ll look into another brand for the next purchase. Also I wondered how many things like nuts you should give? And I’ve read that people give egg and chicken, is that correct? He’s a Syrian by the way.

Re: Muesli or not??
You can continue with that brand, but it's not the best, if you can I would at least move on to Harry Hamster asap.
Yes you can give nuts and seeds, things like walnuts, flax (very good for their fur), monkey nuts,
and yes to chicken and egg - nothing added to them, just bland, no seasoning etc
i don't really have a set schedule with things like this, I just give them to them every now and then.
egg and chicken maybe a few times a month, walnuts maybe 1 or 2 a month - no more as can be quite fattening
flax you could give every few days - i think some people give it every day
