Cheese?
Can I feed my russian dwarf a tiny bit of mild cheddar cheese? I've read cheese is okay but not sure on the types etc

Re: Cheese?
I occasionally have given our hamsters a small piece of cheddar . I have only used cheddar though. Cheshire or similar is fine too but I wouldn’t try strongly flavoured cheeses like Stilton or smoked cheese. Generally dairy stuff is supposed to be hard for them to digest but I have never had any problems giving them cheese as a treat - maybe once a week - and they enjoy it.

Re: Cheese?
I would personally stick to healthier more biologically appropriate foods which would be easier to digest. Broccoli for example is incredibly healthy and would be a much better choice, but there are many safe vegetables to choose from.

Re: Cheese?
Ours get a tiny bit of veg each bday and the occasional extra fresh treat - half a shelled walnut, a few pumpkin seeds, the occasional bit of cheese or cooked chicken or scrambled egg. Which is protein as well might their mix needs supplementing in protein. The main thing to avoid with a dwarf hammy is sugar as they are prone to diabetes, so even fruit should be avoided because of the sugars and ideally a sugar free hamster mix.

Re: Cheese?
My Russian dwarf gets the occasional bit of cheddar too. I would avoid anything soft, blue, smoked, flavoured, or with any added ingredients like onions or chives etc. Hard cheeses like cheddar contain almost no lactose so should be safe to feed if not the most healthy treat.

Re: Cheese?
My lot gets a bit of cheese as a treat now and again. I give them cheese that is not too salty.
Can't see any harm in a little inappropriate food as a treat for hamsters or humans.
They sometimes get a crumb of what i'm eating while sitting on the floor with them.

Re: Cheese?
Mine very occasionally have a little bit of cheese too, in moderation it’s fine.
