Default Kaytee Forti-Diet Pro Health Mouse, Rat & Hamster Food? Thoughts?

Hello!

I was going to get a hamster from a breeder in a few months, but happened upon a for sale ad for a Syrian and a teddy bear hamster in our area, and have decided to rehome one of them instead of getting a younger one from a breeder. They are three months old, and currently on the Kaytee pellets.

I'm especially bad at figuring out diets (mine, or any of our animals), and don't have a real clue as to what our hamster should eat long-term (obviously, we'll have to either keep him on his current diet or slowly switch to a healthier one). Is this food good to keep him on, or should we get him something else as the staple of his diet? Any help would be much appreciated!

Oh--and if anyone has any advice on switching hamsters to different diets, that would be awesome as well.

They're really not good quality. The proper food in the US is Higgins Vita Garden - not Sunburst though as it has lots of dried fruit which isn't very appropriate for hamsters of any species as they wouldn't be eating much if any fruit in the wild.

Gotcha. Should we buy a bag of the Kaytee to keep the rehomed hamster on it long enough to switch it gradually to the Higgins Vita Garden? Or can we just buy the Vita Garden and put him on it cold turkey?

Personally I don't bother transitioning my pets. I know some people do though, but you really should get the hamster on a good food as soon as possible for his health.
