Insane hoarding
My hamster Kiwi hoards an insane amount of food. This wouldn't normally be an issue, but recently she started losing a little bit of weight. She normally weighs somewhere between 41 and 43 grams. She is now 38 grams. She has enough food and 24/7 access to both a water bowl and a bottle. It's like she just doesn't want to eat. I just scooped 2 handfulls of food out of her nest (replaced it don't worry, just don't want it to go old).
Should I be concerned?

Re: Insane hoarding
Have you checked her teeth? All those things could be a symptom of tooth problems.
Is she peeing & pooing ok too?

Re: Insane hoarding
How do I check her teeth?
I’m not sure if her stools are okay, as it’s hard to see when she either goes on her wheel or the far left corner of her nest. Her wheel is often absolutely disgusting though.

Re: Insane hoarding
You can try holding her in your hand then turn your hand so she’s on her back, that should give you a fairly good view of her teeth, or try holding a treat just above her nose so she has to reach up for it & as he opens her mouth again you should get a good view of her teeth, or you may just be abe to prise her mouth open a little to see, if not or if you’re uncertain about how they should look then I would suggest getting your vet to check them.

Re: Insane hoarding
I could only see her bottom teeth, but she chewed through a really hard treat so I think her teeth are fine

Re: Insane hoarding
Some hamsters seem to hoard more than others and I have to wonder sometimes if their background plays a part. My worst hoarder was a little pet shop Chinesey who would move every morsel of food I'd put out to her stashes (she had more than one) straightaway. Being from a pet shop, I wonder if she had, at times had to claim what was hers before the other hamsters in the litter/group with her got to it.

Re: Insane hoarding
I also have a hamster that hoards "tons" of food (about 4-5 times her weight) but this made the bonding process easier because i would get her into a playpen and give her seeds that she would take and move to her stash. I constantly reduce her stashes every 2 weeks. she has a normal weight 48g.
