Default Garlic

What does garlic do to a hamster? My ham is very old, and going south, and he only eats baby food, and oatmeal now. I got baby food with meat, but it has a small amount of garlic in it. Is it ok? Should I just throw it out? Also, I am form hamster hideout, and I just needed another opinion on this.

Default Re: Garlic

Garlic isn't safe I'm afraid. This is because it contains thiosulphate. Increased amounts of thiosulphate can destroy red blood cells making the hamster anemic. Red blood cells are responsible for taking oxygen around the body. The lack of red blood cells can lead to breathlessness and heart failure. It can also cause irritation of the stomach and causes diarrhea.

In short no, anything with thiosulphate like onions, garlic and other alliums are not safe in any form
