Default Freezing Hamster Food

Hi there,

I read recently about people freezing hamster food. I have just purchased a new bag and wondered if i should freeze it in the bag or put it into a container first, or does it really not matter? Does it effect the food in any way?

Many thanks

I would keep it in the bag & put that in a container or freezer bag, keep it like that when defrosting too to be sure all the moisture stays outside the food bag.

Great thanks. Do you leave it for 1 week in the freezer?

A week is best, absolute minimum would be 48hr.

I leave it in its bag and in the freezer for a week. I think I read somewhere that a week does it to kill moth eggs. After that if you have more than one bag in the freezer you can just leave it there until it’s needed. So I always have a spare bag in there so it’s ready when the current one is getting low, then buy another bag and stick that in the freezer until needed.

When you take them out it’s defrosted in a couple of hours and I haven’t had any issues with moisture - when the bag is opened the food is nice and dry and no deterioration - it’s all hard stuff.

I then store the bag contents in a lock and lock box so it’s sealed and stays fresh.

It might be ok after a couple of days - I can't remember where I read - leave it a week to kill moth eggs. But to be on the safe side I leave it a week! There are various articles on the internet - for all pet foods re moth eggs (fairly gross reading) that usually say a week in the freezer. After having an outbreak of moths before I'm not taking any chances! I have sometimes got some food out of the bag in the freezer after a couple of days - when I've run out and the bag hasn't had a week yet - and didn't have a problem but could have been luck as I just did it for a days amount for a few days. And hot weather (and warm houses in winter) are when things hatch out usually.

I guess it makes sense I suppose, the longer its in there the more chance you will kill the eggs. Next bag of food is definitely going in for a week

I have had a couple of moths in the house the last week, I wonder if thats where they came from?
