Default What do you feed your dwarf hamsters?

I'm probably going to be adopting a hybrid dwarf hamster soon and I was wondering what is the best diet for them. I have read they can be prone to diabetes so are there any foods I should avoid? I have a Syrian hamster already and I feed her Harry hamster and science selective pellets. Is this diet suitable for dwarfs as well, or do they need something different?

I feed my dwarfs the Rodipet junior Hybrid mix, avoid carrot, all fruits and anything with honey or added sugar but aside from that they eat a normal and varied diet with fresh foods, nuts and seeds, a bit of egg, mealworms, herbs etc. When it comes to treats or nibble sticks i always carefully read the ingredients list.

Carrot being high in sugar or causing blood glucose spikes is a complete myth and only serves to do more harm than good. Carrot is an extremely healthy low glycemic food which is not high in sugar and just as with any other safe veg can be fed in moderation to all species. I'm not sure where the carrots being high in sugar or causing blood glucose spikes myth came from, but it exists in the human world too!

For the main diet though, Rodipet make excellent foods and that is the only food I can recommend personally. They have very high quality whole food ingredients with no harmful ingredients and happen to be the highest quality premade food you'll find!

Fruit is a far more complicated topic. I would personally advise against feeding any fruit, fresh or dried, unless you have enough knowledge on the glycemic index, how much sugar different fruit actually has, etc. Even knowing that information and providing very tiny portions it is still a risky choice and not everyone will agree with it for various reasons.

Some people do feed Harry Hamster to dwarf hams but it's not really suitable, they do much better with a dwarf specific diet, there aren't any in the UK so I would recommend the one Ria suggested.

I only give mine sweeter veg as a rare treat & don't give fruit but also give a wide range of fresh veg, mealworms, dried chicken & tofu & various seeds as extras & treats.
