Re: Great and Small hamster food
I would consider it to be a fairly low quality food. There are multiple vague ingredients(which there should be none at all), there are unknown colorants(likely artificial - something a food should not have any of), and there's also dried fruit which isn't a very good thing for hamsters even Syrians. The protein also looks very low on this food!
Rodipet have much higher quality foods, but they do have to be ordered online and aren't going to be cheap.

I had a look at the rodipet one for young syrians and it is about the same in terms of the protein, fats and ash components, the only difference was the fibre content of the rodipet one was more. And then the slightly vague ingredients too.
But thank you for your help! Do you know what the protein should be?

Re: Great and Small hamster food
Looking at nutritional values does not tell you the full story unfortunately. Two foods can have identical nutrients but be made up of entirely different quality ingredients as in this case, so I definitely wouldn't rely on those numbers alone!
https://www.rodipet.co.uk/pet-foods/...nior-500g.html
That specific food has enough protein where you could get away without boosting it. You could add extra protein from high quality sources(freeze dried chicken for example) but it isn't entirely needed. I should've mentioned that though or at least that some of their foods would need a protein boost, but there is a critical quality difference with Rodipet and any other food(nothing vague, organic, extremely high quality, whole food based vs processed often synthetic dyed vague junk).

Ahh okay!! Thank you for your help! I do give her a meal worm or two as treats, would they be high enough protein to add?

Re: Great and Small hamster food
Mealworms may work fine, but chicken would be a better source of protein as mealworms are very high in fat(not ideal for daily use for hamsters). Freeze dried mealworms have dubious nutritional value too despite the numbers on many packages since a lot of the valuable nutrition from fresh mealworms that are gut loaded cannot be kept in the dried form. I know a lot of people here use them and recommend them, but knowing they're basically the outer part of a mealworm(something found quite problematic in the hedgehog communities along with their nutritional value being severely questioned to say the least among some reptile communities) I can't in good conscience consider them anywhere near equal to live or freshly killed gut loaded mealworms or a high quality protein such as freeze dried chicken or even freeze dried shrimp(both of which retain nutritional value even when freeze dried - mealworms are very unusual in that aspect). There are other freeze dried meats available besides chicken though!

Re: Great and Small hamster food
Does meat have to be freeze dried? I was going to save a small piece of chicken for my hammy next time we had some; should I not do that?

Re: Great and Small hamster food
Plain cooked chicken is fine as long as it doesn't have any seasoning or anything on it Petite.
