Raw rice? And herb to food ratio
So I have two questions:
1 - if I make a homemade hamster mix and add some herbs into it (to scatter feed) how much should I add? I was thinking like 1:6 or something (using volume not weight)? Or should I try and add the individual herbs into the table to work out nutrition percentages, although I can’t find much nutritional information for hamster herbs and they weigh nothing.
2 - I am still confused after reading threads about this already, is raw rice a no? Some people have said that’s what they have in the wild and lots of grains expand in water, but some said it’s not safe and neither is raw pasta!

Re: Raw rice? And herb to food ratio
Herbs particularly those with medicinal qualities should only be given in very small amounts so I would suggest just scattering a tiny bit of one or another in the cage separately from the food & not daily. Just a pinch of something now & then or a fresh leaf once in a while.
I wouldn't feed raw rice, a little cooked rice as a treat once in a while if they like it but otherwise I don't see that rice really has a place in a ham diet, same goes for pasta really.

It could have been used to add variety to homemade food as hamsters eat grains? I don’t know much about it, however I would like to know how come rice is bad, but things like oats which also expand are okay? Thanks for the help

Re: Raw rice? And herb to food ratio
Hamsters do eat grains but rice doesn't offer the best nutritional value & isn't really an appropriate ingredient in a mix when other better grains or pseudo grains can be used, you won't hurt your ham giving it a little rice now & then but I don't see that it would be good for your ham in the long run to use it on a regular basis in a mix.
What grains or pseudo grains are you using in your mix?
I think some people in Germany use wild rice when making their own mixes (if I remember rightly from previous research!) but that is not the same as the kind of rice humans usually eat, it's more like a grass seed therefore more appropriate.

So if even I used the commercial wild rice you can get, it wouldn’t be nutritious?
I am using buckwheat, pearl barley, oats, wheat, sorghum, rye and millet.

Re: Raw rice? And herb to food ratio
That sounds like plenty of variety especially if you use a few different types of millet, I don't think you would gain anything by adding rice.
