Seed mixture for syrians
Hello! I have a question about syrian food mixes. Specifically i'm planning to do a mix between Higgins Sunburst food as well as Mazuri Rat & Mouse pellets for the added protein. I've been watching alot of a hamster channel and they suggested feeding a syrian every other day one tablespoon of food. What i'm wondering is how many pellets should be put into the food every other day? As they are fairly large i didn't know if it should be one every other day or more.
The pellet nutrition is Protein : 23% Fat : 6.50% Fiber : 4.5%
The sunburst is Protein : 14.00% Fat: 7.00% Fiber 9.50%

Re: Seed mixture for syrians
Do not use Higgins Sunburst. Higgins Sunburst has way too much dried fruit. You would need Higgins Vita Garden which is a much better food, as well as not feeding this food with lab blocks at all. Despite past popularity, Higgins Sunburst and Mazuri is really not a great diet - stick with 100% Higgins Vita Garden!

Re: Seed mixture for syrians
I feed my Syrian a table spoon of his mix daily because a hamster needs to have enough food available to keep a hoard or two. Don't be guided by what you can see they eat because they often eat from their hoards while in their nest.
I also don't believe in waiting until the food bowl is empty before refilling it. I chuck food out that's not been eaten after a couple of days and refill with fresh.
Please keep in mind that this is only my opinion and what i do which may well differ from other people but it's always helpful to hear different takes on matters then draw your own conclusions and do what works best for your hamster.

Re: Seed mixture for syrians
Alright thanks so much! Is the Vita garden a complete diet? I'm reading the nutritional information and it says Crude Protein - Min. 15.0% Crude Fat - Min. 6.5% Crude Fiber -Max. 11.0
Would that be enough protein by itself?

Re: Seed mixture for syrians
Yeah i think it will most likely depend on the hamster i end up getting. I won't be getting one for awhile i'm just learning and preparing ahead of time!

Re: Seed mixture for syrians
Vita Garden is fine on its own. You can add Pure Bites though for a protein boost.
