Default Sprouting seeds

I've bought some flax, wheat and barley seed for sprouting. I did some research on sprouting methods and came across a lot of websites saying that sprouts can be a source of food poisoning. Those who grow sprouts for their hamsters, do you cook them first, or are they safe to feed raw?

I'm curious about this too, I'm currently sprouting barley as a test.

Don't cook your sprouts as it will significantly reduce nutritional value. Some sprouts aren't safe but many are a really healthy treat.
I posted this thread about sprouts some time ago & you might find it helpful.

Thanks for the link to that thread - lots of great ideas there.

Are they safe to feed raw then? I read that some seeds can be contaminated and that putting them in water encourages bacteria growth.

I just grew mine in compost as I was trying to get them to flower so I could dry them out and get the seed pods. It wasn't successful, I just gave the green shoots to the hammies, they loved them, I will read these threads that cypher linked to

Food poisoning from sprouts generally, possibly even always, comes from improper handling of sprouts and/or improper maintenance procedures which would allow harmful bacteria etc to gather without being removed.

This is very similar to raw feeding dogs I think. A lot of concerns people have over such things in the raw meats and such could be easily avoided with proper procedures such as handling, storage, and feeding procedures. However when done properly and safely, raw feeding can be wonderful for dogs and cats along with other carnivores - just as feeding sprouts can be wonderful for hamsters and certain other pets(and humans)!

Personally, I would view sprouts as a vital form of nutrition and enrichment for many pets. I know they're popular in the bird community(parrots specifically) due to their amazing nutritional value in comparison to dry relatively lifeless seed. At the moment I don't have pets that would be too interested in them(and I probably won't for a significant chunk of time now due to a series of unfortunate events), but if I did have a hamster for example they would definitely be part of my overall hamster care.

I've heard some odd things about sprouts being contaminated too but as long as you use good quality seed thats stored properly there shouldn't be any problem, I think most of the problems that do exist stem from poor storage of sprouts after growing them, always best to use them while they're still growing rather than trying to store them.

Thanks AmityvilleHams and cypher for your answers, that's reassured me. I'm not sure about the source of the seeds I have so I won't use them for sprouting (I'll grow them for the grass instead), but I'll try to buy my next batch from a reliable source.
