What's the difference between a teddy bear hamster and a normal Syrian? The foods are different % on rodipet so I'm curious
A teddy hamster is just a long-haired Syrian. I contacted Rodipet a while ago to ask why there were "teddy" mixes with higher protein and fibre. They said that long-haired hamsters swallow hair when grooming and so need more fibre to pass it. They didn't say anything about the protein. That's not something I'd read anywhere else, so I'm not sure how true it is.

This was the email I got from Rodipet:

Thank you very much for your message. "Teddy" hamsters are simply long
haired Syrian hamsters, there is no other general difference between them.
However, when grooming themselves, hamsters inadvertently swallow hairs, and
while a "normal" Syrian's shortish hairs usually just get passed out again
without problems, a teddy hamster's longer hairs can cause digestive issues
like constipation or, in rare cases, intestinal hairballs.

Both longhaired and shorthaired Syrian hamsters can be fed both our teddy
hamster food and our Syrian hamster food without problems, but the teddy
version is higher in fibre and thus aids digestion and makes it easier for
teddy hamsters to pass those long hairs back out.

Ok...but like you it doesn't explain the increased protein. Unless it's for fussy hamsters that won't touch insects? Surely they wouldn't need more fibre though as the fibre in rodipet food is more than in, Harry hamster for example.

We can only guess can't we. Hopefully mine will eat it

I can't get a hold of rodipet or getzoo so it's back to the drawing board. Obviously these are the best foods

What's wrong with puur? It's got a lot of good reviews?
Is there any others you'd suggest?

Is there a problem with Rodipet & Getzoo?
Have a look at the ingredients in the Puur food.
If you really can't get any of the foods suggested then maybe the Bunny dwarf hamster dream expert mix from Zooplus would be ok for your robo, not sure what would be best for a Syrian as I don't keep them.

Only issue I can see with puur is the lack of protein but if I was to add and mix in a protein source that should work right?
