Default UK - Best pet food mix - Mazuri and sunburst alternatives

Hello,

I have had a few hamsters as a child but did not understand care etc and let that to my parents. Now as an adult I would like a hamster again and have been delving in on all its care.

I have found a fair few people on youtube and forums that use a 50/50 mix of Sunburst gourmet blend and Mazuri rat and mouse diet but these arn't avaible in the UK and if they are I would think they are expensive and so would be looking for a cheaper option. What mixes does everyone in the UK use?

Other than this I am thoroughly researching into mixing my own but am aware you still need to give store mixes :)

Rodipet is often recommended, at least if you're in Europe. (Not sure about shipping to other places around the world) They have mixes specifically for Syrian, dwarf or dwarf hybrid hamsters (dwarf species can be prone to diabetes - someone with more experience might be able to say if that's specific to one dwarf species or another). P&P isn't exactly cheap, but both of my hamsters really like their respective mixes.

I agree, there aren't really any good mixes in the UK & none for dwarf species, there are a few good places in Germany that you an order from but Rodipet is the most reasonable for delivery charges & the food mixes are good. They have a site in English here which makes things easier!

I use this one, Beaphar Care+ Hamster. They have a different one for Syrians and dwarfs. Not sure about shipping in other places of the world, since i get mine from a Dutch webshop. What I like about this one is that the food is very much the same so the hamster can't pick and choose (previous hamsters always left the stuff they liked least). https://www.beaphar.com/en-gb/produc...e-plus-hamster

peculiarplanets I really wouldn't recommend the Beapher food, hamsters need a variety of seeds & other things in their diet, a pellet doesn't provide the enrichment that a good food mix should, it is important for them to have a mix rather than a pellet, also I'm not sure Beapher provide the G/A or ingredients, I would never give any food unless suitable ingredients are clearly listed (individual seeds etc not a vague cereals etc) & the correct GA, (protein, fat, fibre).

Thank you all for your input. I happy to mix two or three food mixes together or add extras to a few mixes so that not a problem. Obviously i'd look into the correct proportions to do this in let me know what you guys feed your hammies (if you buy a selection of store mixes that is)

Cypher I forgot to mention that I have seeds, herbs, mealworms and other things that I feed my hamster to give a variation in food. But I'll look into it!

Edit: I have recently been looking at this: https://www.vetsend.co.uk/vadigran-t...SAAEgI0HvD_BwE

Luckily the Beapher food I had was only 250g (when I get a new hamster I first buy a little bit of food to see if they like it) so it's no biggie to change foods.

I could be wrong and misunderstood but I thought Sunburst gourmet blend and Mazuri rat were what people used in USA because they simply don't have a good enough food mix for hamsters over there.
I know a lot of people use Harry Hamster mix, and whilst I am sure some on here may not agree, I think it is one of the better cheaper options, well when compared to your bog standard generic hamster food mix. Because I am aware not everyone can afford the rodipet prices.
I keep meaning to look into hamster food mixes that are available from rat nations (think it is a hamster specific food, not for rats), bunny dreams (again a hmaster mix not for rabbits from zooplus) and purr (amazon). They have been recommended to me in the past, but I need to do a bit more research on it

Some people have had problems with the Ratrations food in the past & it isn't ideal, I forgot to mention the Bunny dream expert from Zooplus, that one is quite a good mix although not as good as Rodipet or the other German mixes & unless you are buying a lot of other stuff & can get free delivery the costs aren't that different really.
I posted about Puur in peculiarplanets's thread, wouldn't recommend that one at all.

My Syrian likes the Harry Hamster best. I also add a bit of the Rodipet mix but he prefers the chunkiness of the HH. My dwarves and Robo have the Rodipet mixes because i could not find suitable dwarf mixes in the UK. All have and love their daily fresh foods, mealworms, linseeds, seeds, occasional nuts, boiled egg, porridge etc and all have a variety of millet sprays in their habitats.
