Default Trixie Small Animal Grass

First time i saw this in the Petshed pet shop. I've always wanted something green and suitable for hamsters growing in their habitats so will try it.

Ooooh please let us know how it goes. I've got a small pot of parsley and mint in Nikos cage which is hamster safe too. Obviously it's to be removed if eating it becomes obsessive I guess that rule would also apply to the grass?

Be careful adding certain herbs. Those high in oxalates eaten too much can block calcium absorption. Basil is the safest I've found that is readily available as a plant. I wouldn't use parsley personally but it depends on how much they eat it.

You can also grow some cress on kitchen roll for them. My gerbils love cress but I haven't tried it with my hamster yet.

It says on the box, in German but not in English! to grow only small amounts for hamsters.

I've put some of the mixture in a small terracotta saucer waiting for it to germinate.

I understand everything in moderation (if it's safe in the first place ofc) as a comparison legumes (up to) 75mg,
Parsley 100mg, spinach 800mg. The leaves hold more than the rest of the plant which is understandable. Thanks for pointing that out though. But like I said in my previous post, if it becomes obsessive and he's consuming an unhealthy amount I'll remove it. At the moment he doesn't seem too fussed about it but I supply him with a variety of foods so that maybe partly why

Sorry Engel. I didn't mean it to sound like I was having a go. It was intended as general for anyone looking at live planting options. I know my Eddie for example will pouch and eventually eat anything that isn't nailed down, including many attempts at putting my fingers in his pouch, so I would never live plant, but if your fur bean is more interested in playing in the leaves, that's fab, plant away.

Don't worry about it. I full understand where you're coming from. Another thing people need to watch is like all fresh foods, be careful if they pouch it and take it back to their nest as it may go mouldy. Also bedding kept around any plants within the enclosure may go mouldy so I like to use pebbles which can discourage them from digging the plant up as well as acting as a barrier between moisture and bedding

Live plants in enclosures isn't the best idea to begin with due to the risks that come with live plants being inside of an enclosure(even with pebble barriers they still add humidity for example). However, you can certainly keep gardening safe plants and sprouts for your hamsters and just offer safe parts once they're grown.

I personally love the potential temporary decorative nature of safe flowers. However, you do have to be careful with where the plants come from. Many flowers and other plants from hardware stores and such can be treated with pesticides which makes them unsafe to eat or allow pets to eat, but when you grow from seed you can choose where you source your seeds from(including organic seeds, or at least non GMO untreated seeds which are ideal).

You can definitely also put a few fully grown sprouts in the cage, but I would still keep them in moderation. Fresh whole foods are wonderful for nutrition and dietary variety, but every single thing that gets fed to a hamster does need to be fed in reasonable safe amounts just as with any other pet.
