Hi everyone....since this topic is here. I have a question: is green or red clover ok for hamsters? I went to a store yesterday and they had bags of seeds. I did not buy because i didn't know if they were safe or not.

I know that green clover is safe because i give my hamsters clover and dandelion from the garden as a tasty, fresh treat.

Well the parsley didn't work out...he started to pay a lot of attention to it so I had to take it out. This got me thinking. There are a lot of safe plants so was going to grow some to put into the cage as cuttings rather than the whole thing like AmityVilleHams said. Something I'm going to read into but I grow some of my own flowers and food anyway so I will know what's been but in to grow the plant in the first place.

Is there a thread listing safe plants or is this something people would be interested in me making a separate thread on suitable plants/flowers for hamsters. Obviously only if people are interested and find it useful

I think people would appreciate a thread on edible plants, i know i would. They seem to have a lot of vegetation growing in German hamster habitats and i saw a list of suitable plants on a German forum but never got round to translating and listing them.
Personally, i have doubts that growing whole plants in a hamster habitat is a good idea in case the hamster overeats and i would only give a sprig.
My Syrian gets the odd dandelion flower and daisy in the summer, a small dandelion leaf or clover which he really enjoys and a fresh basil leaf all year round but there are plenty more edible plants.

Hi there, I have recently bought some of this and am currently growing a small amount in a smaller little dish like you said. I just wondered it once it has grown can you put the dish in the cage or do you need to cut of the grass and just put that in? I wasn't sure if it would be bad if they ate any seeds?

Thanks!

There have been lots of threads on safe plants in the past but you'd have to do a forum search to find them, there is a list in the Wiki section though.
Safe and Unsafe Food and Plants - Hamster Central WIKI

If you want to have a look at the German pages it's easy enough with Google translate.Scroll down a bit for the plant section.

I wouldn't put the whole dish in, just cut a little & give it fresh, the seeds would be fine but the growing medium may not be.
