Default Harry Hamster or Bunny HamsterDream Basic?

As the title says. Which food is better for Syrians? The expert version doesn't seem to be on Zooplus anymore only the basic version.

I recommend the Rodipet Syrian mixes over both of those options tbh

That seems weird? I just ordered the expert version like yesterday?

Zooplus in different countries have different things in stock. The UK site hasn't had the expert one in a while.

As for the OP I use both mixed. Looking for an alternative for the HH tho as mine just don't seem to enjoy it very much.

I use the Rodipet Junior Syrian mix 50/50 with the Bunny Dream basic. Nothing wrong with Harry Hamster as it contains everything needed. The Bunny on its own I think there would be a lot left that isn't eaten as such tiny bits mostly. So mixing it with something else would be better. I originally went with Rodipet/Bunny mixed and supplementing protein as it was a soya free solution. However Rodipet food is now organic and does include soya.

Our last hamster did fine on nothing but Harry Hamster and lived to two years 8 months. But I wasn't keen that it totally relied on soya to provide all the protein. The piece sizes are good for syrians though.

Mixing HH and Bunny would be a good option. Although you would still need to supplement protein then as Bunny has less protein so 50/50 mix would lower the overall protein levels.

I havent used HH in a while but I found the variety in the mix decreased and was mostly corn and pellets its still a good mix in terms of nutritional contents but would need supplementing to provide stimulation and add variety.

The HH has the biscuits as well and monkey nuts I reckon it's a good mix for a newbie as it's simple - no need to worry about protein amounts etc as it contains everything needed - then any extras as fresh food are for treats/variety. Syrians do seem to like the bigger pieces in HH as they're easier to pouch. Our last Syrian wouldn't eat anything else!

Having been able to do further research on the brand, I can say with certainty that my recommendation would lean towards Rodipet's food as well. It may be initially low in protein but that is not hard to boost if you're just using the regular Syrian food.

However, the Rodipet Teddy Hamster food(junior, not senior) is surprisingly high in protein at a wonderful 17.6%. They also don't have pellets or synthetic vitamins or added minerals(they do know the naturally occurring amounts though which is important) which is definitely an advantage.

Interestingly enough having dealt with Rodipet customer service just a tiny bit out of curiosity, their pet food products are EU sourced and not treated with irradiation(not necessarily true of many other products they offer though). If I had the option to use Rodipet's foods in the US I would, but sadly the dream is just not meant to be unless I somehow figured out a crazy solution that would probably never work anyways(but if anyone has brilliant ideas to solve this problem, I'm sure US hamster owners would appreciate it).

Harry Hamster is definitely not a food I'd ever recommend though, as it does have hidden artificial dyes and is loaded with pellets.

As far as Rodipet including soya goes, for me it's not too concerning being organic(no worries on GMOs like pretty much any other soya containing diet). I would prefer no soya for nutritional reasons however it feels like a matter of picking which battle to fight, and in this case a biologically appropriate truly enriching organic diet wins. It is worth mentioning that the Teddy Hamster version does have higher soya content though!

Yes the Rodipet mixes are organic So no GM. However it still has to be eaten! When I used Harry Hamster, it would all be taken/pouched. When I use Rodipet and Bunny, masses is left and there is a lot of selective feeding.

Views on Harry Hamster vary, but I think it's a good basic diet and way better than stuff sold by pet shops generally. It may not have the quality of ingredients of better mixes, but hamsters do seem to enjoy it and it meets their basic dietary needs and has syrian sized pieces. I quite like it actually! Hamsters seem to like the taste and smell. I prefer using the Rodipet and Bunny for the variety of protein sources and the organic factor, but an awful lot gets left, so I supplement a lot with fresh food. An all in one mix can be quite important for a new owner and HH has variety unlike Science Selective which is just a pelleted all in one mix. Although hamsters seem to really like that too!

So - if you have the time to work things out and can supplement well then a better quality food mix can be good. If you just want to make sure the hamster gets the nutrients required and not make mistakes or don't like working things out with percentages etc, then Harry Hamster is ok and supplement with fresh food for treats and variety rather than essential nutritional reasons.

I have to say I have worried using the Rodipet and Bunny mixes with lower protein percentages, that enough protein is actually being regularly taken and ended up adding the odd science selective pellet every few days as well, just in case.

I use the junior rodipet one because our syrian won't eat the senior one at all - it has a lot more herbs in.
