Default Cucumber Troubles!

It has been about a month that I have had my precious Charlie. I have learned so much about him. One thing I know about him is that he loves cucumber! Every night when we hang out together for about fifteen minutes I give him a slice of cucumber. I let him eat what he wants, and when I need to go to bed myself, I throw away the rest of the slice. This way, I know he won’t get sick from a day old cucumber.

Over the last week, though, Charlie has changed his cucumber strategy. Instead of taking little nibbles and swallowing them, he quickly rips of chunks of the slice that I am holding between my fingers and puts them in his cheek pouch. Then, of course, he runs over and puts the cucumber bits in his food corner. This would be fine... EXCEPT that I won’t allow him to keep it in his cage because it will go bad. I feel bad about this because I think that he doesn’t eat it right away anymore because he knows I will take it away. I don’t want him to feel like he can’t have it...

I know this isn’t a big problem or anything I just wanted some of your opinions

Awe, that's so cute!

I would suggest letting him have those pieces of cucumber for an hour and THEN taking it away. After a while of doing this, he'll probably understand that his food is going to get taken away (At least the cucumber) if he doesn't eat it. The cucumber won't go bad in the time span of an hour, so... Yeah. Oh! I just read the first part about going to bed right after, sorry! I would give him the cucumber a bit earlier so you can do that if you want.

Good luck!

I feed my hamster fresh food in the evening and remove any leftovers in the evening of the next day, mainly because he chucks leftovers in his toilet and it gets peed on. He's a tidy hamster. Its in a hamster's nature to hoard and veg/fruit don't go off that quickly. We keep ours for a few days and not all in the fridge.

Just noticed that you're in California which is a bit warmer than England, UK. I'd give him a small portion like a quarter of a slice he's likely to eat in one sitting if you're worried about it going off and see how that goes. He may even decide to eat it there and then.
Hamsters are strong willed little creatures.....

Great idea! I will do this.
Also, Charlie has a similar pattern to the hamster in your profile picture, hehe.
