Has anyone seen this mix brand before and can comment?
Hi everyone,
Thank you to those who kindly assisted me in my thread under housing pertaining to the size of a hamster bin.
We are expats in Saudi Arabia and the Petshop we went to today was stocked well for cats, dogs and birds but the hamster section was very dismal. They have shavings, hay and the tiny cages for hamsters but that's about it...oh, and hamster food and treats. They also only have Syrian hamsters and made it clear any other type of hamster won't be gracing the shop anytime soon. There is only one type of hamster food. Has anyone heard of the following:
Vitakraft premium menu vital mix for hamsters.
I would be so grateful for any feedback on this brand as it doesn't show up on any listings of good hamster food.
If this brand is not good could someone please kindly advise me on the best food to order through Amazon that would be reasonably priced as I would have to ship every couple of months. This could be a nightmare but I am willing to be open minded and make peace with the fact that I might have to ship most things. I saw no sign of any sand for bathing or anything else hamster related.
Any advise would be so appreciated.

Re: Has anyone seen this mix brand before and can comment?
For anyone in the Middle East or South East Asia...After doing research and finding a nutritional breakdown of many brands on another hamster forum, this particular brand is classified as not recommended but looking at the breakdown of protein, fats and fiber, the protein is low which merits no recommendation but the fats and fibers are in the good scale. I’m going to add a mealworm a day and monitor my hamster...when I get him/her....if it shows signs of becoming fat I will scale down to every other day and gage again. The mealworm will cover the low protein level. There is corn that has been added to the mix as a filler but looking at all the other brands that are deemed recommended they all have negatives ranging from colorants, fillers, high fat levels etc so it’s a case I feel of picking the lesser evil. Just thought I would add what I found pertaining to this brand.

Unfortunately all the good mixes come from germany which are difficult to ship outside of Europe
If you get a Syrian, protein in the form of freeze dried chicken cat treats would be better as most Syrians wont eat mealworms.

Totally agree...it’s been very frustrating. Most of the brands won’t ship to Saudi which makes things tricky but not impossible. There are some brands but they are double the price without shipping.
The freeze fried chicken treats...Will any be ok? Will go and look at my local pet shop or will get online. Any brands or types you recommend?
If the protein level is 13% how much should I give? One pellet a day?
Any advice would be great.

Question...most of the brands like the one you linked needs to be supplemented. What do you supplement with it? Do you buy two different mixes?

Until I came on here I thought the food I was using was good, i did research it last year and I thought this was one of the better/good ones. Now I am thinking i need to look into it a bit more. I give Luna some egg each week, which she loves, but maybe she needs more protein than that. I guess we are always learning and ideas/best practices do evolve and change over time.

This is tough...I’ve been pouring over nutrition facts and the breakdown given by that other forum is very informative but you notice quickly that there is actually no brand of mix that has enough protein and many have too much fats and not enough fibre.
