Insects?
Hi everyone,
I was looking at food options as I'm thinking I'll probably change Cadmium's seed mix (the larger pieces really are too big for such a teeny ham, I think) but the Rodipet mix I've seen recommended is lower in protein so you can variety in what they get protein wise. I know people feed their hamsters mealworms, but do they eat other insects too? On the site they had a mix of insects, and I wondered if that was a good option for her?
Here's what I found:
https://www.rodipet.co.uk/pet-foods/...nack-50-g.html
Is this suitable for a dwarf? Do they eat other bugs? Would the other bugs have the same issue of being huge compared to Cadmium? Sorry if I'm being dense, I just want to do the best thing for her and I'm worried she's not getting everything she needs from her current mix.

Re: Insects?
Other insects are fine for dwarf hammies! Every hammie has different preferences tho and she might not like some of the new bugs or she might find a new favourite! Its worth trying out different options to see what she prefers
Also I highly recommend the Rodipet dwarf mixes if you’re looking for a new mix

Re: Insects?
Thank you! I was looking at the Rodipet mixes, they look like they'd be more manageable for her size wise and I've seen people recommend them here.

Re: Insects?
I also recommend that mix, it isn't ideal if there are large pieces (pellets I assume) since they need the smaller seeds. If you can find some dried shrimp those are less fatty than mealworms and dwarfs seem to like them, I've got them off Ratrations before. The crickets/grasshoppers can be a bit & miss sometimes.

Re: Insects?
I've found our hamsters won't eat the things like crickets and silkworm pupae! Mealworms maybe but not always.
For our dwarf hamster (robo) I used the Junior Dwarf bio rodipet mix, mixed 50% with the Bunny Dwarf Dream mix. That means mealworms are included and he gets the variety if both mixes. The Bunny one has more smaller seeds in.
That mix is still too low in protein so it does need supplementing. I used to give freeze dried chicken every 3 days or so for that, plus a nut or two once a week.
These days I add a few science selective pellets (all in one mix with correct level of protein) on top of the food bowl, or scatter them. Those always get taken.

Re: Insects?
It is the Harry Hamster mix, and it's the orange and green pellet-y... biscuity... things she's not eating. Go me and my language skills lol
I'll have a go with the chicken, I'm not sure where to find the dried shrimp, I thought about it when I was researching food because I'd seen quite a few posts and videos of people saying their hamsters won't eat mealworms :/
Would it be a bad idea to mix the seeds and smaller pieces she has been eating with the new mix? Seems like a waste to just get rid of it :/

Re: Insects?
You can mix two mixes. In fact it's a good idea to do that anyway at first, to introduce the new mix gradually, so their stomachs adjust. I don't bother with insects personally. The Bunny mix has mealworms in and there are other ways of supplementing protein. Getting some science selective as well could be good.

Re: Insects?
I would also mix the two for a bit but in my experience changing them off Harry Hamster pellets and onto a more suitable diet has been really easy and they've loved the new food.
I personally think insects are a really important part of their diet and is the best way to raise protein levels since that is closer to what they would eat in the wild. Apart from Ratrations I'm not sure where else sells shrimp unfortunately. I'd still give the crickets etc a go as some hams do love them!

Re: Insects?
Thanks for your suggestions Just to be clear, it's not just a pellet diet, it's a mix of pellets and seeds.
