What are the best hamster foods
I am getting my new syrian Hamster soon and i’m not sure what food I want to go with. I am limited to brands as there is not a lot around where I live but I was wondering if vitasmart is a good brand??

Re: What are the best hamster foods
Harry hamster is a good seed mix, but you will need to supplement your hamster with a source of protein (i.e. egg, mealworms or porridge) and fresh fruit and vegetables.

Re: What are the best hamster foods
I wouldn't really recommend the Vitasmart, are you in the US? There are very few good mixes there unfortunately so your best bet would probably be Hazel Hamster (same as Harry Hamster in the UK).

Re: What are the best hamster foods
Welcome to Hamster Central and enjoy your new hamster when you get him/her.
I use Oxbow Hanster & Gerbil food with my current hamster and the previous two so it's all combined instead of a mix. Then my hamster can't eat his favourite pieces and leave other pieces. I also give freeze-dried 100% chicken and fresh vegetables. (All in small amounts because he's a Roborovski hamster.)
Enjoy your new pet!

Re: What are the best hamster foods
Cotton hamsters actually need a seed mix - they are foraging animals so need that variety. Oxbow and any other pellets provide no enrichment and if you use a good and varied diet then generally picky eating isn't a big problem, so I'd definitely look into changing his diet.

Re: What are the best hamster foods
Harry Hamster is simple as it contains everything that is needed - all the right vitamins, minerals and protein levels. Although supplementing the protein a bit with fresh food or as mentioned above is a good idea. It is also sugar free which is a good thing.
It depends what country you're in.

Re: What are the best hamster foods
I live in canada and hazel hamster is available online but it is very very expensive to ship. If I were to go with vitasmart is there anything I can add in to help give my hamster get the right nutrients?

Re: What are the best hamster foods
For extra protein you can give dried mealworms if your ham likes them, freeze dried chicken is really good, sold as cat treats, as long as it's pure dried chicken with nothing added that will give a good boost.

And yet the label on the oxbow food advertises (like it's a good thing) that since all food is the same, they don't get the chance to be picky. But they do need variety
