Default Herb and food advice

Hi everyone! I'm doing some research into supplementing my bought hamster food or even making my own, as the quality of mixes I can get my hands on is very low. I've been reading all the past threads on here about this, some german forums, online ingredients lists and advice etc, but one area I'm struggling on is herbs. Could someone please confirm whether these herbs are safe for hamsters (or are only in small quantities, etc)?

I have access to all these dried unless stated otherwise.

Peppermint
Oregano
Sage (&fresh)
Basil (&fresh)
Coriander leaf
Rosemary (only fresh but can dry it)

Also, does anyone know of a pre-mixed type of dried mixed vegetables (or buying different types individually) you can buy? E.g. beetroot, carrot, broccoli, parsnip etc? I am stuggling to find ones without fruit. Rosewood sells one that has some veg but is mainly fruit based.

Thanks very much!!! xxx

I know ZooPlus sell some JR Farm dried fruit and veg individually, never bought them though so unsure of the quality.

In the UK you should be able to get good mixes have you tried Mixerama, Getzoo or Rodipet? They are complete mixes most of them so you won't need to do a lot of supplementing. The ones in the petshops are all pretty bad unfortunately. I also wouldn't think too much about herbs as although they are ok to give (not sure about peppermint or rosemary) it's best in small portions & not very often. Herbs can be quite strong smelling so I generally don't give fresh ones. Dried herbs and flowers have gone down quite well with my dwarfs but that's more for foraging in than anything. As mentioned the JR farm herbs & plants are quite good, I think the ones I'm using now are called Field Herbs but they do a lot of different ones. They're better than most of the rosewood ones. Dried veg I'm not too sure, Rodipet do some (broccoli) but to be honest all my hams have preferred it fresh so again it's not something I'd really worry about - it would only be a treat occasionally. If you're giving fresh veg daily there won't be a problem.

Thank you both, I'll look into those! I do give fresh veg everyday and I haven't looked at those brands as of yet because I try to support my local pet shop - but again, as you said, their food quality is no longer meeting requirements. They used to sell a few Burgess varieties which I was happy with but now don't I've been going off of the recipes and advice given here mainly HAMSTER INFO - Ernährung so that's why I ask about dried veg as these German forums seem to think it's pretty essential.

Those mixes come from Germany and are good natural & complete foods. I’m not too sure what the German forums say but I don’t think they generally feed extra dried veg as a part of the main mix, more like occasional treats. Since lots of those mixes already contain dried veg of some sort so it wouldn’t really be necessary to add any more. Not sure what type of hamster you have but that especially applies to diabetes prone ones.

You really don't need to give dried veg at all tbh, fresh veg is far more important & I've found my hams have rarely shown an interest in dried veg when I've tried giving them a little.

Thanks Cypher. The reason I mentioned it is because of the recipe given on the link I posted preiously and the fact that one of my hammies, Bean the roborovski, shows almost no interest in fresh food; he appears to prefer dried everything, whereas my Syrian Smidge is the opposite!

As for Mixerama, Getzoo and Rodipet I like the look of some of their items, but their shipping costs seem astronomical compared to what I could spend by buying some singluar items (e.g. and Zooplus and Purayou) and combining them. I'd be hoping to use this base mix as the stable for my two hams and three gerbils, adding each critter's specific extras in afterwards.
