Default Versele Laga Hamster Crispy Museli and Hybrid Dwarf Hamsters??

Hi I have a hybrid dwarf hamster Willow and currently she is eating Harry Hamster. I am aware of the strict diet due to diabetes. I've had one hybrid dwarf before but If I'm honest I'm not fussed on a lot of the dwarf hamster mixes as they contain alot of millet and not much else so I was wondering; I have Versele Laga Crispy Hamster Museli which I supplement my Syrians diet with would it be ok to give some to my hybrid also? Say 2-3 times a week?

I wouldn't feed that one to your dwarf ham, it really sin't a very good quality food, HH isn't really suitable for dwarf hams either.
I don't . know if Rodipet will ship to NI, maybe not? If they do then they do good hybrid mixes, the other option would be this one from Zooplus, it's a good food with variety & smaller seeds which are more appropriate for a dwarf.

You could try make your own seed mix. There are several YouTube videos, and they don’t come out too expensive for a kg.

Isleofhamsters I wouldn't recommend making a home made mix without doing a lot of research first, it's quite complex, I wouldn't go by what you see on youtube unless you can be sure it's reliable source, you know all the mix ingredients are appropriate & the GA of the mix is given.

I don't plan to feed either one on its own but was thinking of giving small portions of each? I know HH is not ideal as it's bigger pieces but I've read some break them up for them and they manage ok? The Versele Laga although higher in fat content has more smaller seeds which I thought would be ok. Rodipet do ship to NI and I have bought before but shipping is expensive as is from zooplus and I tend to bulk buy which is not very often from these sites. I have alot of hamster food and sort of what to use up what I have before purchasing more. She will have a varied died and I plan to give tiny portions of veg every now and then. As long as the mixes are safe to give although not the most fantastic nutritionally together I thought they would balance out ok? I have the vitakraft emotion beauty dwarf hamster but it is terrible and I believe worse quality than the other two.

To be honest, if he likes the Harry Hamster you may be best sticking with that and putting out some seeds as extras/supplements. It's the only one that has the right level of protein. The others all need the protein supplementing.

I put out a few linseeds and a few hempseeds each day on a separate little dish - very nutririous and thye love them!

I do use the Bunny one (the basic one, not the expert one though) for our robo and he does like it but he doesn't eat much of it And it doesn't have enough protein so you need to supplement the protein then. A bit of carrot in that quantity won't do any harm.

A little bit of dried carrot is ok, I wouldn't worry about that.

The basic has pellets & biscuit type pieces so isn't as good as the expert which is more of a natural mix.

Both are a bit low in protein but with a hybrid that's very easy to supplement with their love of mealworms!

Thanks Serendipity and Cypher. The HH is a fairly good quality mix and I can as you say suppliment with maybe with something else. She has been used to eatting the Harry Hamster so far so maybe I will stick with it and suppliment with other things or another mix a couple times a week. I guess there's no perfect mix out there as such and they all need more than just a mix too. Just the low sugar can be tricky when it comes to mixes.

I wouldn't try and change harry hamster up to suit a dwarf to be honest, even though she may be eating it right now it still isn't a good mix for dwarfs and every time I've changed my dwarf hams off of their original HH they've been really happy to be put on a dwarf mix. Supplementing doesn't take away from the fact that there are large biscuit pieces and a complete lack of small seeds which there needs to be a good variety of. Then if you start supplementing too much you can't know if they're eating properly either. I understand you want to use up the mixes you buy but if they're unsuitable there isn't much you can do unfortunately. Even if they are safe or balanced, food & foraging is a big part of a hamster's life so I think it's really important to give them a good mix that they can actually enjoy.
