Working Treats other than Monkey Nuts
Basically, my new hamster hates monkey nuts. He has been leaving them in the bowl and walked away when I tried to feed him one. All my past hamsters have liked them and I also like giving them as the hamster has to work and chew through the shell in order to get to the nut. It's quite annoying because I bought the only size bag available which is huge and now have a bunch of nuts to eat.
Anyways, I was wondering if anyone could recommend a different working treat or even just a large nut that I can add to his dish. I already do that working toy where you put some seeds in a toilet roll ball so they have to chew through the cardboard to get it. The nuts also have to be accessible from a supermarket.
Thanks for any help!

Re: Working Treats other than Monkey Nuts
My Maestro does like monkey nuts so he gets to chew them open. So the other nuts I use as treats don't have shells. I give him a walnut or a hazelnut. Loves them both.

Re: Working Treats other than Monkey Nuts
For taming treats I use pumpkin seeds or these Rosewood little hearts
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rosewood-Na...+little+hearts
For healthy cage treats I also give half a walnut (shelled) or half a brazil nut (shelled). I cut the brazil nut in half and eat one half first because sometimes you can get a bad tasting one! If it tastes ok I put the other half out for him. So maybe a nut twice a week. If he's extra lucky he gets a piece of fresh coconut - I get the little packs of fresh coconut pieces from the supermarket. Very occasionally a small piece of cheddar cheese, and sometimes a small piece of apple (no pips) without the skin, or a blueberry or a small bit of strawberry. They love anything fresh.
They can be funny with monkey nuts - it can help if you start it off and make a bit of a hole in the shell as a lazy hamster will give up trying to crack it open. Newt went off them quite quickly though.

Re: Working Treats other than Monkey Nuts
So I raid the bakery counter in the supermarket where you can buy packs of walnuts, brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds and sunflower hearts

Re: Working Treats other than Monkey Nuts
Small amounts of dried coconut would be ok.
I use pumpkin seeds in the shell so they have to do a bit of work for them rather than just getting the seed for free! You can't get them in the supermarket though, ratrations do them.
As you've got all those monkey nuts you could make a small hole in the end just big enough to get one nut out then put another treat he likes in there so he still has to work for it, I often put small seeds in when they've finished the nut.
You can wedge seeds into the whimzee toothbrush as well, a bit easy for them but still gives them a bit of something to do.
