Default Stuck without burgess dwarf mix!

I have somehow only just found out about the Burgess dwarf mix being discontinued. Luckily my dwarf just died the other night aged 2 years otherwise she'd have starved once this bag ran out, it's the only food she'd eat.

Since it was 2016 when I got my first hamsters and did all the research I was just on here making sure I was still up to date with everything before I think about getting a new dwarf. Only to find out about the burgess food being gone. Shops local to me only sold Harry Hamster and Burgess Dwarf Mix so now I don't know what to do. I don't really want to be buying food online and paying out for delivery unless I absolutely have to. I know the pieces in Harry Hamster are too big for a dwarf but suppose I crushed/cut the pieces smaller would it be suitable?

Unfortunately there is no suitable dwarf mix in shops and even Syrian mixes to be honest. The burgess one was acceptable but there are much better options online. Would it be possible to buy more and put it in the freezer? So that way you can place less orders. Mixerama and getzoo do bulk options so that would be most cost efficient. Even with the expensive shipping it’s very much worth it. Or bunny dwarf hamster dream expert on zooplus, there is a min. spend for free delivery so you could stock up on other things while you’re at it.

Harry hamster is comprised largely of pellets so imo it’s not particularly suited to any hamster but especially not dwarfs - it’s not just the size of the pieces but more the contents itself. They need smaller seeds in their diets which just don’t exist in HH.

I am so sorry to hear your dwarf hammy just died. I find it necessary to buy online as there is so little good stuff available in shops. But yes you could use Harry Hamster and many dwarf hamsters are happy with it.

Zooplus sell the Bunny Dream dwarf hamster mix which is excellent - probably better than Burgess. Although it means ordering online you could get 2 or 3 bags at one time. I use that mixed with a Rodipet dwarf hamster mix but just for variety really as both have the same percentages of everything really.

This is the one I get. The Dream Basic. Some people get the Dream Expert but I'm happy with this one. It has mealworms in as well and no nasties. It's a bit low on protein but I add the odd science selective biscuit and also supplement protein with treats like nuts or freeze dried chicken.

I've heard about the Bunny Dwarf Hamster mix a lot but it's double what I was paying for Burgess and that's without factoring in delivery. I suppose I could switch back to using Hempparade to make the order from Zooplus worth it but the substrate I'm using now is much cheaper. It looks like no matter which way I work it, having a new dwarf will cost me double what it did before without that food.

And when I first got my Syrian in 2016 (he's nearly 3 now!), everyone said Harry Hamster was THE best food for Syrians and now it's not? God this is stressful. :') I wish they just didn't sell products that weren't any good! Trying to find good products for my hamsters is honestly harder than trying to find good products for my babies!

It isn’t ideal I know - i get the majority of my hamster supplies from Germany now. Rodipet and local reptile shops for enrichment. I think Harry hamster was considered great for a long time because people didn’t really think about buying online or even consider that there may be better options in Europe. But really a few bags of the Bunny food will last one dwarf quite a while so it isn’t extortionate.

Okay so shall I go for the Bunny Dwarf HamsterDream basic or expert since they're both the same price?

Expert is better I'd just go for that one. Forgot to say you'll need to supplement it with some more protein - a few extra mealwoms and shrimp will work & usually go down pretty well with the dwarfs. Or you can try freeze dried chicken cat treats too.

Yeah I already give extra mealworms to all my hamsters ^_^. Sounds like my plan is all sorted then, thank you!

I'd go for the bunny expert over the basic too, it doesn't have any biscuits of pellets in it & is a more natural food for them.

Harry Hamster is still the best food available in UK stores but there are better alternatives available online from Germany that weren’t as accessible a few years back. Its still a decent mix but for dwarfs you’ll want to supplement it with a little extra protein
