Talking Feeding Advice Please! x

Hello all.

I have hamster muesli for my hamsters.
I have one Syrian and 2 Russians.
How much food are you supposed to give them daily?
They also get fresh veggies quite regularly and meal worms daily.

One of my Russians doesn't seem to like the muesli at all. He just wants to eat nuts, worms and fresh veg so I'm worried he's not getting enough to eat.

Can I get some advice please?

Probably a teaspoon maybe a bit more for the dwarfs and more like a tablespoon for Syrians but it’s hard to say exactly. Better to give too much than too little and they will always have a hoard to store some. As long as the hoard doesn’t start growing massively or anything I wouldn’t worry.

What mix are you feeding? Dwarfs do need a different diet to Syrians really as they prefer more small seeds than anything. That might be why the Russian isn’t taking to it, it’s best to buy them a separate dwarf specific mix. Nuts mealworms & veg is really not an ideal diet. If you let us know what country you’re in it’ll be easier to recommend good mixes available.

I feed my Russians about a teaspoon or a little more a day, don't have Syrians so can't say about the amount for them.
As mangoandmimi said the two species do require a different diet & your Russian is probably being picky because the mix isn't really suitable.
Are you in the UK? There are no longer any good dwarf mixes available in pet shops in the UK, the best options are either the Bunny Dwarf HamsterDream Expert from Zooplus or the Rodipet mix, the Bunny mix is a little low in protein for younger hams but that can be topped up easily with a few mealworms, for Syrians most people use either Harry Hamster or the Rodipet Syrian mix..
You can feed veg daily once they're used to it.

Just realised you have 3 hams if that’s the case rodipet works out rather expensive - I would personally go with the 1 or 2kg on mixerama who do good dwarf & Syrian mixes. Expensive delivery but it will still work out much cheaper than rodipet. Harry hamster is a last resort really as it is pretty much pellets and not mich else.

That's a good point, I don't usually suggest Mixerama as I tend to think the delivery cost will put most people off but if you buy larger amounts & keep it in the freezer it's well worth it.
Haven't tried any syrian mixes but this dwarf mix is very good.

I can't read German.
I'm having an issue reading the site.
Can you buy the food from anywhere else?

You can't buy the Mixerama food anywhere else but you can use google translate if you just paste the url in it should work. https://translate.google.co.uk/
I use google chrome & it will translate for you if you set that option.

I agree, its best to feed them separate mixes tailored towards their species. I’m currently using a supplemented harry hamster mix but im working on creating my species-specific mixes for my hamsters. I have 6 hamsters (3 Russians, 2 Syrians, and a robo) so commercial mixes can get pretty expensive, especially for the dwarfs

What are you putting into mixes that you make yourself? I'd like to make my own mix if possible.
I've now learned that my little Russian boy is also eating seeds and corn.
The Syrian will eat anything and everything if she gets half a chance and my little Russian girl is happy with the same mix as the Syrian.
It's just the little Russian boy... He's also very clingy.
He wants to be out of his cage all the time and be cuddled.
He has a huge cage with tiers, toys and 2 wheels.
