Default Without pellets ok?

So basically, I'm planning to feed my hamster Harry Hamster with some extra proteins and seeds added.

Do I have to add a pellet as a protein booster or can I be fine without one?

The Harry Hamster has everything in that is needed. Rather than add anything to it (this might upset the proportions of nutrients) it would be better to give the extras separetely. So I have a food dish for the hamster mix and another dish somewhere else in the cage (keeps them active going from one dish to another!) which I put his piece of daily veg on and a few Linseeds. He then gets an extra daily on top of a little hide (he knows where to look for it) maybe half a walnut or a small piece of apple eg. Then I scatter something extra occasionally - eg a few pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds. That isn’t necessary but they like foraging for them You don’t need additional pellets - hust the odd healthy treat, a chew stick (I like the rosewood naturals ones) and a very small piece of fresh veg each day (every 3 days at first till they get used to it).

This is something which comes down to personal prefference really - it not necessary to add but to me it does no harm if the nutritional values are almost the exact same (I.e. Harry Hamster and Science Selective)
I personally prefer to add a pellet food to the Harry hamster food - as my Syrians have been a bit picky and will leave some pieces so aren’t getting the complete balance of nutrients - therefore I like to mix in the science selective hamster pellets in which my girls seem to quite like (so use them as treats too!) to ensure they are getting all the nutrient they need.
Plus Liquorice seems to prefer the science selective pellets to the Harry Hamster food so will eat her pellets first before eating the rest of her mix!

Serendipity has given so very good recommendations also on what else to feed. Also I too would recommend the rosewood natural treat sticks these are a fond favourite of my hammies.

Thanks!

I think I'll get a twin bowl so I can put the Harry Hamster in one and put treats and/or veggies and fruit in the other.

To boost protein I personally prefer to give mine freeze dried chicken, shrimp, or mealworms than add pellets. My syrians prefer the chicken over shrimp and mealworms but my Russians and robo like all three. The protein level in the HH mix is fine for a Syrian though.

Cheers alpacassei,

I will just use dried mealworms and or dried freshwater shrimp for protein.
