Default Chicken baby food

Hi guys.

I've been thinking, because I'm veggie and we don't have tofu all that frequently, about Hesper's protein. She currently has mealworms but I want more variation.

I was thinking chicken baby food so I don't have to cook chicken but all the ones I've seen have carrot or sweet potato in and she's a dwarf hybrid so I'm wary. Any suggestions?

Open to all other input too. Chicken in other forms I haven't thought of like sliced or something? Maybe I could freeze some? Have considered dried shrimp too. Where would I buy this? What about mushrooms and cheese or other vegetarian sources of protein?

Many thanks from a totally clueless vegetarian!

A little bit of the sweeter veg in baby food is ok now & then but tbh the amount of protein she would get from a tiny bit of baby food wouldn't be much, it would be fine to give her some once in a while anyway if she likes it, none of my Russian hams have ever liked meat baby foods for some reason but they all love baby cauliflower cheese!
Cheese should only really be given as a rare treat, mine do get a little now & then but probably not more than once a month, if that even.
Scrambled egg or boiled egg, especially the white if fine as a protein top up, again not too often.
I'm a bit iffy about giving mushrooms, not sure why as they are supposed to be safe but I just don't feel certain about it.
You can get shrimps from a lot of places online, not sure about pet shops as I've never really looked, I've had them from ratrations & rodipet among other places, can't remember where now! They are a lot lower in fat than mealworms so a good alternative & generally well liked.
Which mix are you feeding her? She may not need that much extra protein.

Forgot to mention you can get dried chicken, the one I've been using from Zooplus has been discontinued sadly but you could try thrive chicken which is available in most pet shops & maybe even supermarkets, bit hit & miss with mine, Zylvan loves it Míri won't touch it & I've not had much luck trying it with Russian hams in the past but you never know! Don't buy Dokas dried chicken from Zooplus though, it goes mouldy.

She's on Harry Hamster awaiting a transition to Burgess Dwarf. I have a freezer arriving on Tuesday and want to freeze it before I start a gradual switcheroo.

Egg could be a good idea. I normally scramble mine in a little butter but I assume that's not a good idea for her?

I'll do some googling on the shrimp front. What should I look for? I read freeze dried on here somewhere. I have zero knowledge of shrimp!

I give my Russians freeze dried chicken pieces. I buy the Wilko brand ones but they should be easy to find in the cat treat section of pet stores as well. You can also give hamsters small amounts of the plain chicken Applaws/Encore wet cat food (it’s 100% chicken breast in broth). They can have small amounts of cheese as a treat but I wouldn’t recommend it as a regular protein source.

Dried shrimp are also a good protein source but you’ll need to keep the, in an air-tight container because they smell horribly. Hamsters can have most dried insects as well.

This is the freeze dried chicken I buy, I like thst they’re already in hamster size pieces. https://www.wilko.com/en-uk/wilko-na...-17g/p/0471628

This looks like a great solution for me! I think I'll have to pick some up tomorrow when I head into town. Thanks for that!

I'm rapidly going off the shrimp idea. Hadn't considered the smell... Seafood makes me gag!

Cheers to you and cypher!

Burgess recently switched to a pellet mix which isn’t great for hamsters unfortunately but the Bunny dwarf mix from Zooplus is pretty good and Harry Hamster is fine if supplemented (I supplement mine with dried herb/flower mixes, millet, and mealworms/shrimp/chicken).

Eggs scrambled without butter is fine.

You can get dried shrimp in the wild bird feed sections of pet stores and some supermarkets.

It's not the pellet one. Must be old stock? Picked it up from a new pet shop that just opened. Hesper has herb/flower mixes and mealworms too.

I will look at bird sections for the shrimp.

Millet? Should I be adding that too and where do it get it?

Sorry for the 20 million questions!

The shrimps smell a bit like mealworms more than seafood tbh but probably a bit more smelly than mealworms even
This is what you're looking for if you do want to give it a go.
Gammarus Shrimp - £1.32 : ratRations.com

The Burgess you have must be old stock as most places stopped selling that one & only sell the pellets before Christmas sometime, it should be fine but you will need to switch her to another brand when that's finished.
With that or Harry Hamster she will be getting enough protein anyway so I wouldn't worry too much about extra.

If you're swapping over to Burgess that has loads of millet in it so she probably won't want any more but you can buy millet sprays in the bird section of pet shops so she might enjoy one while she's still on Harry Hamster.

Wonderful! Thanks for all your help. Both of you have got some great ideas for me to look in to!
