I haven't heard of hams being fed earth worms but they can eat crickets & grasshoppers, these are usually fed freeze dried though & I'm not sure if it's safe to feed live ones.

I think live food could escape! Probably best not live. In the wild hamsters do eat insects as well as grains etc - but not sure if it's just small insects - I had the Rodipet mix with dried crickets in and our hamster wouldn't eat the crickets! I think when they have more choice than in the wild, the prefer human food! Raw veg, the odd bit of plain cooked chicken or beef (no sauces or gravies) if you're having a roast one week - fruit occasionally, nuts always go down well as well.

I would be concerned about the insects carrying diseases or chemicals from the soil/ground.

No I wouldn’t recommend feeding wild insects from your garden to your hamster. As you would be unsure if these bugs have come into contact with any pesticides which can be harmful to your hamster. Plus they may carry diseases which may be passed onto your hamster.

The other thing which makes it unsafe to feed wild insects is that you don’t know what that insect has eaten - as this will to be passed into your hamsters as insects digestive systems are very basic so don’t break down chemicals in the same way as ours. For instant snails caught for human consumption are fed on a controlled diet to clean their gut to make them safe for humans to eat - plus also increase nutritional value.

I would stick to feeding dried bugs - as live bugs can bite too.

As others have said, it’s safer to feed dried bugs. You can buy them suuuper cheap in the bird section of pet shops and most supermarkets.
