Bugs in my hamster food
Hi! I've used this brand of food since I got my hamster 18 months ago and it's always been fine. This particular batch I bought a couple of months ago and right away I froze it. After that, I just gave it to my hamster without any issues. Well, today I was putting it in his bowl and I noticed TINY LIGHT BROWN BUGS in the food. So I went to the container and there were HUNDREDS of them. What do I do? Are they bad?
Ps. I also have another food mix in a different container and I checked and it was fine. Maybe it's the mix, or the container ( it never shuts properly)

Re: Bugs in my hamster food
Those are probably weevils, they live in grain and stuff, you need to purge all contaminated food. I had them all over my dogs treats once and then on my rabbit food. Nasty guys but generally harmless. Look into how to get rid of weevils, specifically grain weevils. Like I said, I just had to toss everything and also check any rice, pasta, flour or wheat/grain based products!

Re: Bugs in my hamster food
If you'd already frozen the food then I'm not sure if it would have been something already in there or if something may have got in somehow, either way I would just get rid of all the food with bugs in, you may have to do a cage clean if they've got into the cage.
Usually food is fine if frozen & kept in an airtight container. How long did you freeze it for?

Re: Bugs in my hamster food
Maybe it wasn't quite long enough, I usually freeze all my food for at least a week & often keep bags in the freezer until I need them.

Re: Bugs in my hamster food
Hi,
When you find a bug in your hams food.
You can dry it in the sun.
with the heat from sunlight, the bug can run away.
me myself is from tropical country, indonesia.
Most of us use our own ingredient as out hammie food and ours can easily contaminated by bug. And we dry it in the sun on daylight.
Its solved.
