Hi, so where I live there is a really poor variation of seed mixes, we only have vitapol (max 12% protein) and versele-laga, (the problem with this food it that most of the ingredients aren't specified, so that's usually a bad sign). Also, our pet shops don't have supplements. Are there any balanced recipies so I can mix the seeds by myself?
One of my hamsters is a really picky eater! She leaves the barley and some other stuff at the very end, and I don't give her anything else until she eats that, but she only eats it when she's really really hungry, so I wanted to know if there is any substitute for barley, that would have the same nutritional value, that I can replace with, and see if my hamster Bambi likes it!

Re: Feeding my Russian dwarf hamster
Hi & welcome to HC.
I wouldn't advise making your own mix unless you really understand ham nutrition & the nutrients in the various grains & seeds that are used, it's worth doing if you do understand all that or have the time to study it but not something to undertake lightly.
Barely is a really good grain for them & hard to replace but you could try some buckwheat if you can get hold of that, preferably whole but hulled would be ok if that's all you can get.
Protein is the easiest nutrient to supplement if your mix is low, mealworms or a little chicken will easily make that up.
Giving a small portion of ham safe fresh veg daily will also help a lot with micro nutrients & is probably better than giving supplements.

Re: Feeding my Russian dwarf hamster
Thank you! My hamster really loves buckwheat, so she'll enjoy that! These days I started to supplement my hams with fresh veggies and just changed their diet a bit! I also wanted to ask if it's ok for hams to eat boiled chicken hearts and liver (I know that they're really good for dogs)?

Re: Feeding my Russian dwarf hamster
I would just stick to the white meat (no skin) if you give chicken, heart & liver would be too rich for hams.
