Default Diabetic food mix ideas?

Hi guys,

Haven't posted for a while. My 4 month old Campbells had diabetes when she came to me. She has been on a mix of linseed, pinhead oatmeal, mixed millet and flax, with mealworms and of course veg every day. Her glucose has improved, though not at zero where I would like it. However she really isn't liking the mix anymore, and she has gone off mealworms.
Do any of you have your own mixes that your hamster's like? I think Belle hated brown linseed, so I swapped her to golden, which she now doesn't seem to like that either. I do try to make it less boring for her, I swap different veg around, give her the odd peanut and a few sunflower seeds, bit of wheetabix. Bit limited on foods for her.

What mixes has she had if any other than the foods you mentioned, she will get bored with so a limited variety of food & I would be very worried she isn't getting all the nutrients she needs without a proper mix.
Have you thought about the Bunny dwarf hamster dream expert? It does have some pea flakes in it but as part of a balanced diet that should be ok.
It depends how much you want to spend on food but Mixerama do a good mix which has plenty of variety & is fine for diabetic hams, delivery is expensive but if you could buy a few bags & keep them in the freezer.

ETA I forgot to say if you want an alternative to mealworms then you can feed chicken, plain cooked or dried, or tofu (my hams go mad for that) both of which are low fat & good sources of complete protein, you can also get dried fresh water shrimps which most hams like too & which are lower in fat that mealworms.

Thank you She is bored with it. I will try her on the bunny dwarf mix. It looks more interesting.
She hates tofu, she hates low fat cheese too. I have been giving her little amounts of egg white. Very fussy eater is little Miss Belle.

I have purchased some Bunny dwarf mix and some JR Farm dwarf mix, which has dried shrimp in, and is said to be diabetic friendly.
Would you mix it in slowly? Or just do a swap? Because she is barely eating what I am giving her as it is. Though her weight is steady, so she has to be eating more than I think she is.
She gives me a look of disappointment at feeding times lol. I know Belle! It does look very bland what she is currently on.

I'm sure she'll enjoy the Bunny dwarf mix more & you can be assured she'll be getting the . nutrients she needs from that. I would do any change gradually but as she's not having a proper mix at the moment & even though her weight is good she may be lacking nutrients I would just do it over a few days, add a little of the Bunny mix on day one & gradually increase it over a few days.
Which tofu have you tried? I tried some of my hams on tofu I bought from the supermarket some years ago & no one would touch it, not sure what it was called now though! I tried again more recently with silken tofu & they absolutely love it.

Thank you. I am sure though that she will pick out the new bits and leave the old bits when I mix them.

I tried her a few time on a brand called Tofoo.co which is organic. I soaked it in water, then gave it to her. She refused to touch it. So I tried her a few more time, and no she didn't even nibble it. So then I tried her on high protein low fat cheese, which she refused to touch. Though I can't blame her, as I tried some and it was awful.
The JR Farm mix I have ordered has dried shrimp in it, so she should get protein out of that too. She also hemp seed, which she does eat, which contains a reasonable amount of protein. Otherwise it will be boiled egg white.

Did you order the JR farms mix or the Bunny mix? I really wouldn't recommend the JR farms mix.
I don't know that brand of tofu, I use clearsprings you don't need to soak it though, it's already in water so you just drain it (rinse it & store in fresh water) & give a small piece just as it is.

I purchased both the bunny mix and the JR Farm, I was going to mix them. What's wrong with the farm mix? It says the following:

JR Farm Feast for Dwarf Hamsters is a natural and species appropriate complete food mix for dwarf hamsters. The tasty recipe contains smaller grain and seeds and was developed specifically to meet the nutritional needs of dwarf hamsters. It is enriched with animal protein such as meat, cheese and fish. It does not contain any small fruits or other sugar-rich ingredients which can lead to diabetes in dwarf hamsters. Instead of which it has delicious, crunchy vegetables and nuts. It is enriched with vital vitamins and minerals to keep your pet lively and healthy.
JR Farm Feast for Dwarf Hamsters at a glance:

Complete food for dwarf hamsters
Lower fat content
Sugar free
With grain and seeds
With animal protein: chicken, beef, shrimps and fish

I will buy a different brand of tofu next week, see if she eats it this time.

The JR food sounds fine but I tried some time ago (I tried just about every mix there is!) & the quality isn't that great, too many big rock hard bits of corn & big biscuit pieces that I had to break up for my hams to eat at all, I wasn't impressed!

None of my hamsters, in the 20 years of having them, have ever eaten the biscuit pieces! Even my Syrian's wouldn't eat them. Pouch them yes, but never ate them or the pellets. I still don't actually know what is in the biscuits. Can't be anything interesting, healthy maybe, but not tasty.

I mainly purchased the JR Farm for the shrimps and protein, I will pick out the corn. But she will have mainly the Bunny dwarf mix, with little bits of the JR mixed in.

I think I have had every hamster mix available, there is always something in every single one, that my hams haven't liked. Either that, or they like it to begin with, then go off it.
