Question I own a very picky hamster, has anyone made homemade food??

Hi!

About a week ago I bought a syrian hamster, hes only 8 weeks old, and whilst we had a shakey start with a few nips and squeels, he is now running around in his ball and letting us feed him by hand (although still no holding yet!).

He has a little bit of a... personality? He likes arguing back if you move any of his stuff and also likes squeeking at you when you give him apple drops.

But... he is VERY picky with his food.

He doesn't like any of the biscuit bits you get with store bought food, he sometimes likes sweetcorn, some times doesnt, he always loves seeds and apple drops (as treats) as well as carrot.

So my question is, has anyone made homemade food? I really have no idea where to begin, I have read about making sure there is the right proportions of nutrients etc. but at the moment he is just kicking everything out of his bowl that he doesn't like (mostly the green/orange biscuits) and eating everything else, so making a huge mess. I bought some sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds (organic, no added anything!) and he ran out, ate them all and then went back to sleep. I've read about people making dried fruit and vegetables, but I don't know if this will be beneficial.

Any help will do! TIA.

(also, attached is a picture of my gorgeous guy, named steve) (maybe he's just retaliating after being called steve...)

Steve is a very handsome young boy

It could be that he is still settling in and maybe being a dramatic with his food. What food are you feeding him? Is it different food to what he was being fed before you got him?

For picky eaters there is a biscuit based food http://www.petsathome.com/webapp/wcs...E&gclsrc=aw.ds but I'm not sure I would change him to that when you've only had him a week. There is also burgess dwarf hamster harvest which he might enjoy if he likes seeds http://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pe...00g-by-burgess I'm not sure though if that would provide all the nutrients for a young Syrian though.

If you let us know what you're feeding him we might be able to make better suggestions

A week isn't long at all so he will still be settling in & adjusting to new things, have you changed him from the food he had before you brought him home or is he on something different now?
Making your own mix is a really big undertaking there's a lot to consider & it takes a lot of time & research so if you're fairly new to hamsters & their needs then I would stick to commercial mixes. I make my own mix & am happy to discuss it but from my experience it is a lot of work!
How much & how often do you feed him?
It's generally best to give them enough for a few days then not give more until all the food has gone.
It doesn't matter if he kicks the food out of the bowl & makes a mess he'll still find it if he's hungry, many of us scatter feed anyway so a bowl isn't totally necessary.
You do sometimes find there's one or two bits in a mix they aren't so keen on but as long as they eat most of it that's not such a huge problem.
You could try adding some of those Science Selective biscuits BP linked to into his mix but I wouldn't feed just an all in one biscuit type food.
