Re: Hamster Food?
I would get the Burgess dwarf hamster one from Viovet. You can't go wrong with that. It's sugar free as well and a good quality mix. You can also get it on Amazon.com I think

Re: Hamster Food?
Burgess might source dried insects from China which would be a serious concern(highly likely as it would be difficult to get non-Chinese dried insects).Without knowing that information,I'd just go with Higgins Vita Garden rather than take a chance.Vita Garden would be more convenient as well, and it's diabetes friendly(unimportant for a robo but good for future reference!).
I'd just go with Vita Garden and Pure Bites freeze dried shrimp. There's no added sugar,no unsafe or questionable ingredients,no questionable sourcing in this particular product, and it's much easier to get

As far as mealworms go,the dried ones do tend to be sourced from China. There might be an odd reptile brand for canned mealworms that wouldn't be from China, but it's a lot easier to find freeze dried shrimp for example that isn't sourced from China.

I'm curious Amity as to why you think this about the Burgess food? Have you contacted them about it? There also seems to be a lot of mealworms about from various different stores, how do you know that they tend to be sourced from China? Have you contacted everyone that sells them to find out? I think it's a little bit dangerous to make such sweeping comments without providing any real proof. At this rate our hamsters are going to be left hungry. I appreciate that you care about the welfare of the hamsters and we all want to be feeding them only the best there is but it would be much better if you would actually post evidence.
My apologies to you Zazwaki for hijacking your thread.

Re: Hamster Food?
It's impossible to contact Burgess without a phone number so it's not that easy to find out.Made in the UK or not the ingredients can be sourced elsewhere(not saying all are,but it's completely possible that they could be and without knowing the safety level goes down).
However,I do know that dried mealworms in particular are incredibly difficult if not practically impossible to find from sources other than China. This information is pretty easy to find, whether it be the country of origin of a product(or where it's made)or something that a manufacturer of a specific product states.Sourcing on UK products is much harder to find, and even if a product is made in a certain country it can still outsource ingredients as mentioned before
I'd honestly love to be proven wrong and find that there was one magical non-Chinese source of dried mealworms if nothing else(neither sourced nor made in!)but after digging fairly deep a while back the likelihood just isn't there.Even then, the chances of Burgess actually sourcing from a non-Chinese mealworm source are going to be low,and there could still be some very weird and completely unexpected ingredients sourced from China!

Re: Hamster Food?
As far as I'm aware virtually all mealworms do come from China, there's always been variables in the quality of mealworms but even the best still come from chine, it's no big deal & I'm sure my hams don't mind
I'm not sure your own personal research is all that relevant really Amity, if it's something that you have a particular interest in then maybe start another thread, it's just not realistic for those people who have hams & need to find them a quality food in the here & now to be worrying about something you may never find the answers too, it just over complicates things when people want a straight forward & doable solution to their problems.

Re: Hamster Food?
I contacted Burgess easily through their contact form, though there is also a phone number and address. I found them to be very helpful and responsive when I had to get in touch with them about a packaging issue.
Here is their contact details Amity if you still wish to continue your research.
