Pumpkin seeds for Syrians?
Oh no... I am in the taming process and I have been using pumpkin seeds.. and been given her 5-6 a day!! I knew they were healthy treats for gerbils I just thought it was the same for hamsters I have been looking on the forum and people say only to use them as an special treat! I am so silly!!! I am just to generous with my treats. Any time she climbs up my arm and let me handle her she is in treat heaven... whoops. She is still young and one very active hammy in the large living world eco cage about 120x80 cm and a 12 inch wheel. I am so worried she is going to be overweight she is currently 2 months old and weighs in at 107 grams is that too heavy! I feel horrible I just making my baby fat. She doesn't seem fat but I feel like she is. Today I had a super long taming session and 10 pumpkin seeds were given. Oh no... She is a breeder hamster and I heard they are sometimes bigger than ones at the pet shop. I am going to cut down pumpkin seed consumption as to only 1 after the taming session is that ok?

Re: Pumpkin seeds for Syrians?
I wouldn't worry over it in all honesty. A pumpkin seed or two a day won't hurt. I'd offer less than you've been giving, around 2 a day is good. Other healthy treats like plain cheerios or a small piece of veggie also work well! 107 grams is a good weight for a syrian, especially one from a breeder. As long as she overall seems healthy, weight isn't much of an issue. Young hams usually burn most of the fat off that they tack on anyways Our hams can be sweethearts, but it's important not to give into the puppy dog eyes and give more treats! Best of luck with your new little one, and never be afraid to ask lots of questions Best wishes

Re: Pumpkin seeds for Syrians?
That is rather a lot of pumpkin seeds! I agree it won't have done any harm especially with a young active ham but one a day is probably plenty, try to vary treats & not give too much of any one thing.

Re: Pumpkin seeds for Syrians?
You could take some of the sunflower seeds & pumpkin seeds from her Harry Hamster & use those for hand feeding so she's not getting too much extra & will eat the rest of her mix too.

Re: Pumpkin seeds for Syrians?
I don't think you should worry, I've also started with the taming process and my hamster loves the sunflower seeds. Like stated in the above comments, offer her less and give her something new which she hasn't tried yet. That will keep her curious, try and find something that she will like but don't completely get rid of the seeds, give her 2-3

I wouldn't worry. Try varying them with sunflower seeds or flax seeds. You're not going to be taming her intensively for ever and a young ham is so active she will probably run all those calories off. As she becomes more tame don't treat her quite as often and you can get into a routine with her food and treats which is sustainable. She'll be fine
