Default Russian Dwarf feeding

Hi,

I have a Russian dwarf arriving soon, about 5 months old. Can you please let me know what is the current best advice on feeding them? I think hamster is currently on unlimited muesli-type mix. I had in my head that these hamsters can be prone to diabetes so correct diet is important.

Thank you all.

If it's a hybrid or Campbell's then yes they are prone to diabetes & you need to take a little extra care with diet.
Just avoid any sweet or sugary treats (including honey) stick to veg rather than fruit & don't feed the sweeter veg very often, ok just as a treat now & then.
It's best to feed a sugar'fruit free dwarf specific mix like Burgess dwarf hamster harvest (available from most pet shops & online) or Bunny Dwarf HamsterDream Expert which is only available from Zooplus here.
They tend to need a little more protein than syrians so it's a good idea to supplement their diet with a few extra mealworms which they love.

Hello,

I feed mine Burgess Dwarf Hamster Harvest and JR Dwarf Hamster Farm Feast and Science Selective Hamster Biscuits (crushed they seem to enjoy these and they're a complete food so if they are selective eating they get everything from the SS that they're missing out on via selective eating).
The JR Farm Feast is on Zooplus, the Burgess I get from my local pet shop but it's available widely online/ elsewhere, the SS biscuits I get from Amazon but are probably also widely available elsewhere.

I gave them the odd sugar free treat & veg weekly, I think it's personal preference (and lots of research) into what mix you want to feed exactly but I've opted for Dwarf Hamster specifics due to knowing they're suitable as a base and giving them treats and add ons as and when I saw fit.
