Question Baby Syrian Hamster Diet?

Hey everyone!

It's finally time to get a new hamster after the passing of my late hamster lady.
I'm getting my new little one next friday and so far everything is prepared.

Though I am not sure what diet suits a young syrian best... I've read a lot about diets for older hamsters (1+ years) but couldn't find any information on a diet for younger hamsters, except that it should be high in protein.

Any advice on what to feed?

Thanks in advance!

Hamsters should not leave for new homes until the age of 5 weeks at a minimum. So, your new hamster will not be under 5 weeks old (in fact, they will more likely be 8-10 weeks old). At this age, they are fully weaned and should be fed the same diet as an adult. The best mix for Syrian hamsters is Harry Hamster Muesli. Providing fresh veg is a good idea, regardless of age. You can feed one finger nail sized piece daily.

Baby hamsters (that is, hamsters under 6 months old) can be fed a little more protein than older hamsters. You can feed this in the form of boiled egg, cooked or freeze dried chicken, meal worms, Brazil nut, applaws chicken flavoured wet cat food.

Don't go crazy with the protein, though, as this can be bad for their kidneys. I feed a half centimetre piece of protein maybe 3 or 4 times a week.

If you're getting a breeder ham then I would ask what it's been fed on & continue using that gradually switching over to whatever mix you choose to use.
If it's a pet shop ham then the diet it's on may not be good but still any change should be gradual.
As AP said the main thing with a young ham is just to add in a little extra protein, dried chicken or mealworms are best, but don't overdo it.
Gradually add in some fresh veg slowly building up to a small piece daily, a few small pieces of nut are a good addition too, variety is the key with extras.
A lot depends on which mix you choose to use, you have some really good choices online in Germany.
