Exclamation Critters Choice - EEC Permitted Colourants

Just looked at the ingredients of these Critters Choice treats which I have fed Quigley, and they contain EEC permitted colourants, which Amity has said are known to cause cancer. Quigley has only eaten about 5 sticks and 5 buttons maximum in his life (probably less) and I won't give him any more.

Sticks:
https://www.viovet.co.uk/Critters_Ch...oaAkwHEALw_wcB

Buttons:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Small-Ani...40g/B003ZGBXDO

I feel like such a bad mum will Quigley get cancer from the amount he has had already?

Generally you'd need repeated exposure over time,so this amount wouldn't necessarily cause cancer right away.Just don't feed them in the future, and try not to feel bad about it

However,if you wanted to make homemade treats or could find natural alternatives with only safe ingredients that would definitely be a good idea for long term options.

It's typically not a one time exposure=cancer type thing. He would need to be having it quite often for it to really cause any issues. Besides that, all of us are exposed to carcinogens on a daily basis, it's something to avoid, but do remember that some things really aren't worth worrying over. For example, here in the US, wood shavings for pets are labeled as carcinogenic! However, we all still use aspen shavings with no issues. Just something to keep in mind

Thank you Amity. I actually don't feed treats usually except as a very occasional one off, so hopefully it's ok. Ugh just so angry with myself and also the manufacturers for using the stuff! I have half a mind to write a complaint letter. How can this be allowed?! If it weren't for you, I wouldn't even know that EEC approved colourants caused cancer.

Drago it's very kind of you to comfort me. I really do hope that my ignorance has not hurt him in any way. It's a comfort at least to hear that he'd have needed more exposure to do any damage (hopefully).

Cigarettes tend to cause cancer, yet not all smokers get it. Alcohol causes multiple health problems yet some people drink their whole life without any problems. It's all very individual, I think. Just be careful and I think everything's going to be okay!

Thank you Burakki just needed to check that I hadn't done untold harm! I do worry about my pets and doing the best for them, so it upsets me that I made this mistake.

On reflection, all my past 7 hamsters regularly ate these sticks and buttons (I know! I'm sorry! I didn't know better!) and none of them got cancer, so hopefully Quigley won't get it from the few that he has had. Even so, I will make sure to steer clear in future.

Honestly artificial colors are only a tiny portion of the perfectly legal horrible things in pet products(whether natural or not, since natural products can be just as dangerous) So many things just aren't known when it comes to safety, especially since it takes quite a bit of in depth research to figure all these things out.

Thanks Amity. Depressing, but probably true I've emailed the manufacturers to ask precisely which "EEC permitted colourants" they use in order to gauge exactly how bad what I have done is.
