Default Chews for bar chewers

What are your tried and tested, most successful chews, especially for a ham that is prone to bar chewing?

Lil loves whimzees but I am looking to diversify

I’ve got a little bar chewer, as you know, but even his whimzees hold no interest for him as of yet! So, I shall be watching this thread carefully myself

Here's hoping we can solve our hammie's bar chewing ways, AP.

Not to answer my own query .. but I did find Lil loved shredding a couple of loofah flowers I had woven between the bars where she was focusing her attention.

I can't find the exact same item again but I wonder if buying some natural loofahs and cutting them into strips may be a good alternative to all the pegs i'm currently working with

Thats interesting... Unfortunately Quigley doesn’t seem to like chewing loofahs. He has a pack of loofah chews from p@h and a loofah dangle in his cage and steadfastly ignores the lot! If it works for Lil though, that is great

Some people manage to stop bar chewers, but in my experience, it's merely a distraction before they inevitably begin chewing once again. The only way to really stop bar chewing is to block off the bars or switch to a barless cage. Is there any way you could zip tie thick cardboard or plexiglass to the sides? This will stop the chewing permanently. As Lil is young, this is likely "young hamster syndrome" and will be grown out of as they get older. However, if he doesn't seem to grow out of it several months from now, the issue may have to do with his cage or setup. Best wishes

Yes, I was afraid that might be the case Drago.

I will do what I can for now and if it persists, I think I may deck out a detolf for Lil.

The only way I was able to force Marti to chew something other than the bars was by tying her toys in the places she usually chewed. Usually she just destroyed them to get to the bars. However, after I tied a really thick stick to her favorite place, she seemed to have given up and just chews her bendy bridge instead. As before I was using sticks of the same wood as the one the bridge is made of, I hope that she just got used to chewing such sticks. Or maybe as Drago said, she's just growing out of it.

A lot of my young hams were horrible mesh chewers. Terrible to deal with! All of them grew out of it around 7-8 months old so I've always chalked it up to them being youngsters. The only ham who never grew out of it was Duncan, but he's a special little fellow

Burakki - I'm glad your inventive idea paid off in the end.

I pegged and boarded up the corners and she just seems to have diverted her attentions to the middle bar sections now.

Such a cheeky blighter!

Just realized I called Lil a "He" multiple times in my posts, so sorry!
