Esmeralda has a mad half-hour after she wakes up for the first time in the evening, and she was bar-chewing, always in the same place - right where she knew I could see her from the other room. Little Madam!

But I seem to have found a way to divert her. I cut up a toilet roll as though I was going to make one of the 'puzzle balls'. But, instead of criss-crossing them to hide a treat inside, I thread the rings onto a piece of sisal string, loosely tie it into a loop so that the rings splay out like fingers, then hang this directly in front of the place she was chewing.

They have to be replaced every day, because she chews them really violently till they disintegrate, and that seems to satisfy her. She goes back into her house for her mid-evening nap, before running into Sagunto and back during the night - ha ha ha. Tomorrow, after I make it and before she destroys it, I'll take a photo.

loofah.jpg

I'm maximising on my distraction technique
Blocked off all the corners with homemade bendy bridges and put a load of loofahs, homemade chews and good old wooden pegs all over the place!

Kashi loved to bar chew in her barney cage when she first moved in. I threaded loads of cardboard inbetween the bars and renewed it every day.

She used to shred it but gradually slowed and now I only give her boxes and stuff once in a while for entertainment. I do change her cage round sometimes and she has deep substrate to dig in and loads of sand.

Good luck!

Good luck! It looks really nice too, a bit more aesthetically pleasing than zip tied cardboard lol

Sorry to hear you are still having problems, but good that some things appear to be working! I'm not too sure how much Kalli bar chews anymore - the pegs were the best thing I tried as they have been chewed, and I haven't seen her chewing, but I suspect she might do it sometimes..

How do people know if they hamsters have completely stopped?

FelicityAnn - I'll have to make some too.

Sophiedoe - glad to hear Kalli seems to have stopped chewing. Hoping Lil will follow suit soon

I can't cope with how cute Lil is! She's beautiful. Also watching this thread with interest as my baby Syrian has recently stopped bar chewing, but, I know he may start up again at some stage! So far his plain dog biscuit seems to have helped and he loves munching the large peanuts from the Harry Hamster mix.
